The Battle Ground Senior Citizens' monthly luncheon took on special significance for Veterans Day in November as the community came together to honor veterans from all branches and eras of service. What unfolded was a moving tribute that reminded everyone present of the sacrifices made by those who served.

The ceremony opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Philip Johnson and James Daley organized the proceedings with care, creating an atmosphere where every veteran felt valued. A meaningful moment was when each veteran stood to share their name, service branch, and dates of service. The room was filled with representatives from every decade, from the 1950s through the 2000s.

In a particularly poignant gesture, widows and widowers rose to honor their fallen loved ones, sharing the names and service dates of spouses who had answered their final call. The emotion in the room was palpable as these family members ensured their departed heroes were not forgotten.

Tim Gunn's bagpipe performance of military songs and Taps added solemnity to the gathering. The Missing Man table stood as a silent sentinel throughout the event, its empty chair and single rose representing all prisoners of war and those missing in action. Several attendees proudly noted children and grandchildren currently serving, demonstrating that the tradition of service continues across generations.

Philip Johnson's handcrafted wooden wall piece, shaped like the United States and painted in the colors of the American flag, was presented as a special gift. Flag raffles featured flags flown over the Capitol, with one designated for a veteran from each branch of service.

Chick-fil-A Cascade Park partnered with the event to provide a portion of the meals, followed by pumpkin pie. Every veteran received an American flag as a keepsake. As Gunn's bagpipes played once more to close the ceremony, rousing applause reflected the community's deep gratitude.

Events like this remind us that honoring veterans isn't just about acknowledging past service—it's about ensuring that those who served know their sacrifice continues to matter.
