LUMOS Hearth & Home

From Fashion Designer to Fireplace Aficionado

Wendy Mitchell, owner.

When Wendy Mitchell opened LUMOS Hearth & Home in February 2020, she never imagined her fashion and graphic design background would translate perfectly into creating a warm, inviting space where Battle Ground residents could find the perfect hearth products and hot tubs for their homes.

"If you had told a younger me that I would own a fireplace and hot tub store, I would have laughed in your face," Wendy admits. Yet five years later, she's not only running the business solo after recently buying out her ex-husband's share—she's thriving in an industry dominated by men.

What started as a five-year plan accelerated to six months when the previous owner decided to close the location. Even with the challenge of launching during COVID, LUMOS remained open as an essential business providing heating solutions, with an increased demand as people remodeled while staying home more.

Where comfort meets honesty
Walk into LUMOS, and you'll immediately notice the difference between it and other hearth stores.  It is a thoughtfully merchandised space where everyone, especially women who often make the purchasing decisions, feels comfortable.

"We're not going to push you to buy the biggest, most expensive product," Wendy explains. Her team's philosophy shines through when she describes downselling a customer a "princess" stove instead of the "king" he initially wanted. "He wanted top-of-the-line, but didn't need it—it was more heater than necessary."

This straightforward approach extends to their hot tub and pool services, too. "A hot tub is supposed to be relaxing, and a pool is supposed to be fun. It shouldn't feel like a chemistry experiment," she says, explaining their commitment to simple solutions rather than selling more chemicals than are really needed.

Battle Ground's hearth headquarters
Her team includes Scott, the main salesperson, and Josh, the installer and operations guy. They offer a remarkable range of products—from stoves and fireplaces to hot tubs, saunas, window coverings, and outdoor living accessories.

With Scott's extensive industry knowledge and Josh's operational expertise, they've become a community resource center, helping homeowners understand products left behind by previous owners.

"We believe in educating people," Wendy says, "and helping them choose which products will be best for their family and lifestyle."

Now is the perfect time to swing by and get the accessories you need for your hot tub, or check out a sauna!

Wendy at home and a fun fact
When not transforming homes with the perfect hearth or hot tub, Wendy tends to her Amboy property, caring for her two dogs (who sometimes visit the shop), nine cats, eight chickens, and four ducks. She's also a foster for the Humane Society of Southwest Washington.

LUMOS’ nonprofit partner is Angels With Misplaced Wings, an animal sanctuary that provides long-term and hospice care in a loving home environment. Wendy has a “tip jar” on the counter for people to donate. She also sells her farm-fresh eggs at the store for $5/ dozen, and the proceeds go to AWMW.
