The Currier Museum is an internationally renowned art museum located right in downtown Manchester, New Hampshire. Reflecting its mission statement– “Focused on Art, Centered in Community, Committed to Inspire”– the Currier's collection, exhibitions, classes, and camps inspire creativity and foster social connection, while its award-winning outreach programming aims to enhance wellness and understanding within the community.
The Currier’s historical collection has a focus on European and American art, while its contemporary collection offers an increasingly inclusive global perspective. Perhaps most surprising to new visitors, the Currier is the only museum in the world to steward two Frank Lloyd Wright homes, which are accessible to the public through guided architectural tours.
In addition to its impressive permanent collection, which includes familiar names like Picasso, Monet, O’Keeffe, Hopper, and Wyeth, the Currier’s curatorial team is dedicated to incorporating diverse voices into its dynamic exhibition offerings– voices like that of Colombia-born, Paris-based Daniel Otero Torres. His new show, Sonidos del Crepúsculo (Twilight Sounds), opened on July 14 and is his first at a US institution. On September 26, the museum will open Impressions of the Human Spirit, a comprehensive retrospective of New Hampshire-based artist and designer Dan Dailey, as well as a solo presentation of the work of fiber artist Olga de Amaral, also from Colombia. And later this fall, the next iteration of its popular Distant Conversations series will feature the work of Ouattara Watts and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
In addition to the powerful stories being told through these exhibitions, the museum itself is also writing a new chapter as it heads toward its centennial in 2029. The Board of Trustees recently announced the appointment of Dr. Jordana Pomeroy as its new Director and CEO. An accomplished museum director, curator, educator, and writer– who most recently served as the director of Florida International University's Frost Art Museum– Pomeroy brings more than 30 years of museum experience to the Currier. As a museum leader and an arts advocate, Pomeroy has been committed to making art museums exciting destinations with accessible art and education programs.
“It is my great honor to lead the Currier Museum of Art as its next Director and CEO,” said Pomeroy. “As this great New England institution approaches its centennial, it continues to serve as an anchor for a changing Manchester, a city bursting with innovation and entrepreneurship, and a region seeking culture at the highest level. I am looking forward to working with the staff and trustees to deepen the connections of the museum to the city and New Hampshire at large and to ensure that the Currier continues to be a welcoming space for all visitors.”
The Currier Museum of Art is located at 150 Ash Street in Manchester. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. While viewing an exhibition or taking an art class, visitors can enjoy coffee, lunch, or drinks at the museum’s light-filled Winter Garden Café and browse the books, jewelry, and gift items at the museum’s gift shop.
