Artificial intelligence, or computer-assisted detection, is a computer program that marks masses or micro calcifications suspicious for cancer on the mammogram. With the refinement in this technology, we are becoming more accurate in finding smaller cancers so that we have better early detection. These advancements also improve our ability to avoid false alarms. With the improved technology, we avoid worrying women who don't have cancer and don't need a biopsy. There will always be some benign biopsies as cancer can be very similar appearing to benign tissue, especially when it is small.
