Cultivating Community: The Story Behind Goffstown Green Thumb Garden Center
From Lawn Mowing to Local Landmark: A Journey of Passion, Community, and Growth
I can’t sit still, so I knew I was meant to be my own boss. I’ve been doing landscaping and irrigation in Goffstown and the surrounding towns for 25 years. I started mowing and doing yard work around my parent’s house when I was eight and then moved on to mowing neighbors’ lawns. When I was 13, I got a job with my friend’s dad, who owned a landscaping company, and my passion for it grew from there. I enjoy working outside, whether opening irrigation systems in the spring, installing patios in the summer, or plowing snow in the winter. I find it so rewarding to help people in our community beautify their homes and gardens that it’s hard to imagine doing anything else.
With my business established in my hometown of Goffstown, I realize that being a business owner isn’t enough, especially now that my girls are in the local schools and take part in recreational sports. Small businesses in small towns are an integral part of the community, and we have wholeheartedly embraced that. I enjoy being a helpful presence at Goffstown Main Street events such as the Pumpkin Regatta, sponsoring and coaching community youth sports, and providing needed services for the town itself.
The Garden Center is something I’ve wanted for a long time, and this is its third year. The goal was to provide a true community location – somewhere to meet up for ice cream after a walk on the rail trail, to get coffee with a friend, or even to enjoy a food truck lunch on a summer day at one of our picnic tables. While we like hearing that folks think we’re a hidden gem, we aren’t hiding! That’s why we painted the building red!
The store features quality, handmade items from local artisans, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s easy to walk in and find a gift you can be proud to give someone – an item that has a story and a real person behind it. We have such amazing vendors, from woodworkers to candle makers to beekeepers with local honey.
When you step into the garden center store, you’ll be greeted by our knowledgeable and friendly manager, Rebecca. She makes everyone feel like an old friend, and we love that. She’s always happy to help customers with gardening questions. Be sure to check out the giant pumpkin she’s growing for this year’s Pumpkin Regatta. If you stop by in September, it will be hard to miss!
The store is open year-round so that we can embrace each season. Selling Christmas trees and turning the store into a Winter Wonderland is one of my passions and has become one of our highlights. We’ll be growing that seasonal event a little every year and really want to help create memories for local families who come to enjoy it with us. My wife, Mary, thinks I go a little overboard, but our daughters, Emma (11) and Brooke (6), absolutely love it!
I advise homeowners to establish yearly maintenance for their yards, which prevents costly repairs. For lawns, sign up for a fertilization program and rotate between dethatching and aeration each year. Trees and shrubs grow best when they are pruned at the appropriate time and will provide years of enjoyment. And don’t forget to tidy up those garden beds with some edging. If you’re not sure where to start, we’d be happy to help you with ideas. Contact us anytime!
