What should I put on my walls?

Finding The Perfect Pieces

As a designer, one of the toughest questions I often encounter is: "What should I put on my walls?" The possibilities seem endless, but for some, that very abundance becomes part of the problem. While it's undoubtedly convenient to head to a local Homegoods store and grab a mass-produced canvas print for under $100, I find greater satisfaction in offering my clients selections and designs that are unique, personal, and captivating.

When guiding my clients in choosing wall decor, I consider several factors. First, I take into account the room itself—the overall ambiance and style. Then, I assess the wall's dimensions, lighting conditions, and, most importantly, the client's personal preferences. Would they like to display family photos, or do they lean toward abstract and expressionistic art? Perhaps landscapes hold a special appeal, or maybe they would love a photo or painting depicting a cherished place or person. I also inquire about their preference for oil paintings or watercolors and whether the space calls for bold colors or more subdued tones. Additionally, we discuss whether to hang one large piece or a grouping of smaller ones.

Once I have a clear sense of my client's tastes and desires, I embark on a hunt to find the perfect piece to adorn their wall. Over the years, I have built relationships with hundreds of artists across New England, collaborating closely with them and my clients to curate the ideal artwork. Visiting the artist's studio becomes an integral part of this process, allowing clients to witness the artist's work firsthand and establish a personal connection. It truly becomes a uniquely intimate experience.

In addition to my role as a designer, I am also an artist, selling my own work and creating commissioned pieces. From pet portraits to landscapes and abstracts, I enjoy the creative challenge that commissions bring. I delve into my client's preferences and artistic inclinations, often providing them with thumbnail sketches or small sample paintings to choose from. Once a design is approved, I paint the final piece on a canvas of the appropriate size. Throughout the process, clear communication with my client is paramount, ensuring that any necessary adjustments and customizations are made. Finally, I install the finished artwork in their office or home, leaving my clients thrilled to possess a one-of-a-kind, bespoke painting created exclusively for them.

Occasionally, wall decor takes the form of more than just paintings or photos. It could be a captivating wall sculpture or a unique find, such as an architectural piece acquired from a flea market or auction. The key point is that wall decor can be more than mere "stuff on the wall." It plays a pivotal role in every space, serving as a focal point that sparks visual interest and brings joy to one's home or office.
