Breast Density and Screening for Breast Cancer

Some might wonder how breast density affects the potential to develop breast cancer. Dense breast tissue can create some worry. Breast tissue density is evaluated at the time of mammography. Approximately 40% of women have dense breasts, which can hide cancer on mammograms and increase the risk of developing breast cancer. Though Screening mammography with 3-D Imaging and Computer Assisted Detection or Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the best first test to screen for breast cancer, Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is an excellent way to view breast tissue without additional radiation. ABUS has the benefit of being more comfortable than a mammogram, seeing through dense breast tissue better than mammography, while completely imaging the entire breast just like mammography. This gentle screening ultrasound thoroughly evaluates the entirety of the breast tissue, giving added reassurance when no cancer is found.

Beginning January 1, 2025, ABUS exams will be covered by insurance in the same way screening mammography is, at no added cost to the patient!
