Honoring Veterans Day: Support, Resources, and Healing

Veterans Day is a time to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Observed each year on November 11, it marks the end of World War I in 1918 while reminding us of the ongoing sacrifices made by service members and their families. This day is more than a holiday—it is a chance to pause, reflect, and express gratitude for the freedoms preserved through their dedication.

For veterans, the transition back to civilian life can bring unique challenges, including navigating employment, reconnecting with family, or coping with the invisible wounds of war such as trauma, anxiety, or depression. Families of veterans often carry their own burdens, offering care and support while managing the stress that military service can bring into home life.

Fortunately, many organizations provide support and assistance for veterans and their loved ones, including:

  • Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) – Health care, benefits, and counseling services
  • Veterans Crisis Line – Dial 988, then press 1 for immediate support
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) – Advocacy, community connection, and financial assistance programs
  • Disabled American Veterans (DAV) – Transportation to medical appointments, benefit assistance, and peer support
  • Local Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) – Community-based support, resources, and connection
  •
On a personal level, supporting veterans and their families can be as simple as listening to their stories, volunteering with veteran-focused organizations, or helping spread awareness of available services.

At Lacamas Counseling, we understand the unique experiences veterans and their families carry. Our team has several clinicians dedicated to serving this community, offering evidence-based treatments such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), solution-focused therapy, and couples counseling to enhance relationships and rebuild connections.
