A Glimpse into the RSU Golf Team: Achievements, Values, and Community Spirit

The RSU Golf team has a rich history that has blossomed since its revival in 2009. Coach Hocutt shared, "Golf was brought back to the Hill in the fall semester of 2009. When we were members of NAIA, we were part of the Sooner Athletic Conference, then transitioned into NCAA Division II and members of the Heartland Conference. In 2021, we became full members of the MIAA Conference – the longest running DII Conference and the one with the most history and value." Under Coach Hocutt's guidance, the team has achieved remarkable milestones, including three NCAA National Championship appearances in the last four years, currently ranking No. 19 nationally.
Central to the team's success are the core values of respect, love, and grace, encapsulated in their philosophy of family. Coach Hocutt emphasized, "Family is our main core value. There are going to be times when you do not like one another or disagree, but you can still love each other and have respect. We are all in this together trying to reach our main goal." This philosophy is reinforced through team meetings where they establish their characteristics and values, creating a supportive environment for all team members.
Training is rigorous, spanning in-season and off-season workouts. "We train and practice hard all year long," Coach Hocutt explained. "In-season, we maintain what we developed during the off-season and do a lot of cardio. In the off-season, we focus on explosive, transitional, core, and dynamic movements in the weight room." The team also engages in yoga sessions to enhance flexibility and mental focus.
Communication is a crucial aspect of overcoming challenges. Coach Hocutt noted, "The biggest challenges we have faced as a team stem from the lack of communication. We talk about it all the time; communication is key to everyone who is successful." This proactive approach fosters a sense of community, encouraging players to communicate openly and support one another.
The team's commitment to community service is evident in their participation in local events. Coach Hocutt stated, "I tell our team that we would not be where we are today without the city of Claremore and Rogers County. We are truly blessed with tremendous support, and we need to give back at every opportunity we can." Activities include being "celebrity golfers" at fundraisers and assisting with community events, reinforcing the bond between the team and the community.
Memorable moments abound within the team, particularly during their first NCAA National Championship appearance, which Coach Hocutt recalled fondly. "We were being led by junior Jessica Green who shot an impressive 65 (-7) in the first round, going on to win the Individual Title, securing our spot in the NCAA Championship." This victory exemplified the team's unity and hard work.
For players like Lydia Sitorus, the experience has been transformative. "Being on a golf team taught me a lot of things, from being a good teammate to being a better person than I was before," she shared. Lydia aims to enhance her mental game this season and contribute to the team's success in the National Championship.
Brianna Maddux reflects on her journey, saying, "My favorite moment was qualifying for Nationals in 2024. Once Lydia putted in her final shot, the whole team ran down to spray her with water and celebrate." She also highlights the importance of maintaining composure during tough rounds, a skill she has honed with Coach Hocutt's guidance.
Sophomore Lauren Anderson added, "Being a part of the golf team has enhanced my college experience tenfold. I have a built-in family of sisters who will always have my back." Her goals for the season include consistent scoring and making it to the bracket at nationals.
As the RSU golf team continues to strive for excellence on and off the course, they remain grateful for the unwavering support of their community. Coach Hocutt concluded, "We just ask for the continued support. Never stop caring or loving these young ladies and other students from RSU – you help make a difference in their lives just like we do." With a strong foundation of values and community engagement, the RSU Golf team is poised for a successful season ahead.
