Remembering America’s Finest

Poppies, wreaths, and grateful hearts honored America’s fallen at Pacific View Memorial Park.

The 66th tribute to fallen American soldiers put on by American Legion Post 291 of Newport Beach took place at Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach. CDR Brian Fleming, Jr of Post 291 welcomed attendees on a sun-drenched, perfect Newport day. The colors were presented by the Post Color Guard, and the crowd of several hundred sang the National Anthem.

The Nightingals sang a medley of armed forces anthems followed by “America the Beautiful.” Sandra Stephens sang “American Soldier.” Nick Berardino, a US Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran, gave the keynote address, which focused on the fact that we are free today because of the heroism of our soldiers.

Floral wreaths were presented to honor our fallen soldiers. Kaylie Harlow, Miss Poppy, a Junior at Newport Harbor High School, presented a wreath of poppies. The scarlet poppy became a national symbol of remembrance in 1918 for service members killed in combat. Inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields," the tradition encourages Americans to wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support disabled veterans.

“Taps” was played by Legion Bugler Richard Grogan. “Amazing Grace’ was played by Nicholson Pipes and Drum duet. The crowd joined Sandra Stephens in singing “God Bless the USA.”

This was a ceremony filled with patriotism and gratitude for those who fought to maintain the freedom we enjoy today.
