Supporting Del Ray’s Teens: A Community Effort

From mental health awareness to everyday encouragement, small actions can make a big difference for our local teens.

The office provides a discreet yet inviting environment for therapy and counseling.

Take a walk down “The Avenue,” and you’ll feel the strong sense of community. From award-winning students to teens working at St. Elmo’s or running booths at the flea market, young people are everywhere in Del Ray. Just as we celebrate graduating seniors, we must also recognize the mental health challenges many teens face.
There Are Many Who Struggle
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, “Turn Awareness into Action,” is especially relevant. Teenagers experience anxiety and depression at two to three times the rate of younger children. While public support for mental health treatment has improved, many teens still struggle to seek help. Fortunately, Del Ray offers six mental health practices along Mount Vernon Avenue, with half specializing in children and teens. Collectively known as The Del Ray Wellness District, these offices  ̶  discreetly located for privacy  ̶  serve resilient and resourceful young people in our community.
Support Is Always Available
Teens play a vital role in Del Ray, and there are many ways to support them. Local businesses hire teens year-round, and organizations such as the Del Ray Business Association, Key Club and Art on the Avenue offer volunteer opportunities. While we celebrate achievements such as awards and championships, we must also uplift those who struggle.
Supporting teens doesn’t require solving their problems  ̶  just being there matters. Encourage them to eat well, exercise, minimize screen time, prioritize sleep, spend time with friends and have at least one trusted adult who believes in them. Instead of offering solutions, ask: “How can I support you?” Small gestures  ̶  praising a barista, acknowledging a student’s efforts, or engaging with young vendors  ̶  can make a difference.
What Adults Can Do to Help
Adults can connect with nonprofits like Spitfire Club, Wilderness Kids, and A Space of Her Own, or find volunteer opportunities through Volunteer Alexandria. If your teen is struggling, reach out to their school or a medical provider. The Del Ray Business Association also publishes a weekly WellRay blog on wellness resources.
Greet Del Ray is proud to support The Del Ray Wellness District. Can you be the adult who believes in a teen’s success?
