Strengthening the Bonds of the Community
Celebrating Art, celebrating diversity
- In January, in response to threats of increased ICE presence and rising community fear and anxiety, I issued a statement reminding the public that Alexandria "is a community where all are welcomed." Those threats have remained and intensified. And, I have been thinking a lot about what it means to be a welcoming community that celebrates diversity.
This fall, our community will recognize 30 years of Art on the Avenue. For decades, this festival has been a celebration of community and culture bringing together diverse artists, traditions, and customs. Strangers unite on our streets and leave as friends. Up and down The Avenue, art and music transcend language and difference, weaving new voices and perspectives into a shared story that strengthens the bonds of community.
Perhaps what I love most about this event is its origin story. Art on the Avenue was born out of a community block party. Gatherings such as these are the ultimate expression of community pride. They transform something so basic ‒ streets ‒ into vibrant celebrations of unity and belonging. They remind us that there is power in collective action.
In a world where the news is often overwhelming, we need inspiration and joy more than ever. In every brushstroke or spoken word, art reminds us that we are not alone ‒ we are part of something greater, together. I hope you find something at this year's festival, a painting or little trinket, that you can hold onto to remind you of the beauty of our community.
