Meet Molly McCabe

Del Ray's Cora Kelly School welcomes a new principal and new beginnings

Situated on the northern edge of the Del Ray neighborhood, the Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology (Cora Kelly) is a diverse learning community dedicated to educating all students for success in the 21st century. Beginning this school year (2024-25), Cora Kelly welcomes a new principal, Molly McCabe. Her career reflects a deep commitment to education and the values of Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), where she is dedicated to creating equitable and collaborative learning environments.

Twenty Years in the Making
Born and raised on Merritt Island, Florida, McCabe’s journey in education began after she earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from Florida State University. She started her teaching career in 2004, working with students from preschool through fifth grade. In 2014, she joined ACPS, where she served as a second-grade teacher and team leader at John Adams Elementary School.
Before her administrative role, McCabe worked with the national nonprofit Break Away, focusing on social justice and leadership. Her path to administration began in 2021 when she became the assistant principal at the Early Childhood Center (ECC) at John Adams. There, she prioritized welcoming families, celebrating community diversity, and empowering young learners. "My mission has always been to affirm families and create a nurturing environment for our youngest students," McCabe shared.

Fostering Relationships Between Families and Educators
During her time at ECC, McCabe implemented the Family School Alliance, fostering collaboration between families and school staff to enhance family engagement. Her efforts included organizing community events and helping families advocate for their children. In recognition of her outstanding leadership, she received the ACPS Vision, Integrity, and Passion (VIP) Award for the 2023-24 school year.
With over 20 years of teaching experience across the southeastern United States, McCabe emphasizes the importance of teamwork in education. "High-quality early childhood education is a collective effort," she said, underscoring her belief in the role of families, teachers, and administrators working together.

A Laser Focus on Success
As she transitions to Cora Kelly, McCabe is eager to maintain the school’s commitment to academic excellence. “I want to support our diverse population and enhance our focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM),” she explained. Her vision includes preparing students to be college or career-bound while fostering a strong sense of community.
McCabe’s experience at ECC has shaped her understanding of the importance of early intervention and play-based learning. "My time there solidified my belief in preparing students for rigorous academic success," she remarked. She views her new role as an opportunity to continue advocating for inclusive education where every student can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.

An Award-Winning PTA
From her first day at Cora Kelly, McCabe felt embraced by the community. “The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and families have been incredibly welcoming, supporting our vision for rich learning experiences,” she noted. In fact, the Cora Kelly PTA has been designated as a 2023-25 National PTA School of Excellence for creating an environment where families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging, demonstrating how strong, effective school-family partnerships enrich the educational experience and overall well-being for all students. The association also won a Virginia PTA award that recognizes the impact Cora Kelly’s inclusive family engagement has had on its school community.
As Molly McCabe steps into her role as principal, her focus will remain on creating a supportive learning environment. She aims to foster collaboration among all stakeholders, ensuring that every child’s potential is recognized and nurtured. With her extensive background and unwavering dedication, she is poised to make a significant impact at what is known as ACPS's "hidden gem."
