USSFCU Marks 90 Years of Service with Growth, Innovation, and Deep Community Roots
From Senate beginnings to national reach, the credit union celebrates a legacy of people-first banking
As the United States Senate Federal Credit Union (USSFCU) marks its 90th anniversary in 2025, the institution is celebrating not just longevity—but steady evolution, member-driven innovation, and a commitment to the communities it serves.
Founded in 1935 by nine Senate employees during the Great Depression, USSFCU was created as a cooperative alternative to traditional banking. Its mission was simple: offer safe, fair, and accessible financial services to their peers on Capitol Hill.
“Ninety years later, that core philosophy—people helping people—is still the heart of everything we do,” said Arthur Green, Chief Experience & Marketing Officer of USSFCU.
A Modern Credit Union with Deep Roots
USSFCU has transformed over the decades from a niche operation into a national, full-service financial partner. While its early focus was on serving U.S. Senate staff and employees, today it supports a broad and diverse membership across all 50 states. This growth reflects not only the strength of its service model but also its ability to adapt to changing times.
In just the last 10 years, USSFCU’s assets have grown from $500 million to $1.5 billion—a milestone that has empowered the credit union to reinvest directly in its members.
That growth has enabled several significant advancements:
- Enhanced member services, including more competitive rates and loan products
- Improved digital tools, such as mobile banking, digital wallets, and online account management
- Wider access, through a network of shared branches and thousands of surcharge-free ATMs nationwide
- State-of-the-art security, with AI-driven fraud protection and upgraded cybersecurity infrastructure
Despite its national footprint, USSFCU remains firmly anchored in the Washington, D.C., area. For more than 30 years, its headquarters have been based in Alexandria, Virginia—a city that continues to play a central role in the credit union’s identity.
One key location is its branch near the Braddock Metro Station, situated on the edge of the Del Ray neighborhood. This strategic spot gives members—especially commuters and small business owners in the area—easy, convenient access to in-person services while maintaining a strong local presence.
“We’ve never lost sight of where we came from,” Green said. “And we take great pride in being part of neighborhoods like Del Ray, where our impact can be felt daily.”
Celebrating a Legacy: New Foundation, Member Stories, and Community Impact
In 2025, USSFCU launched the USSFCU Foundation, a charitable arm focused on investing in communities where members live and work. The foundation supports initiatives in:
- Financial wellness
- Education and literacy
- Community development and inclusion
“The foundation is a natural extension of who we are,” Green said. “We’ve always supported community causes, but now we’re doing it in a more focused, strategic, and lasting way.”
The 90th anniversary is being celebrated with a series of activities that reflect both appreciation for long-time members and enthusiasm for the future:
- Member appreciation events, both in the DMV and virtually
- Outreach initiatives in Alexandria and Del Ray, supporting local businesses and families
- A storytelling campaign featuring multi-generational members and staff
- Continued investment in digital tools and personalized service
Human Touch in a Digital Age
While USSFCU embraces a digital-first strategy, it remains committed to personal connection. Members can access accounts through mobile apps, chat support, and secure online platforms—yet the credit union ensures real human interaction is always available.
As USSFCU looks ahead to its next chapter, it remains grounded in the same cooperative spirit that started it all.
“We’re grateful to our members, past and present,” Green said. “This 90-year milestone isn’t just about our history—it’s about our promise to keep delivering secure, compassionate, forward-thinking financial service for generations to come.”
