Those Yard Signs Mean More Than You Think

Eco-City Homes are helping Del Ray homeowners lower utility costs while building a more energy-efficient Alexandria.

Have you noticed the green and blue yard signs popping up around the neighborhood? These Eco-City Homes are key to helping achieve the city’s goal of 53,000 energy-efficient homes by 2030.
Chris and Renuka are happy to have an Eco-City Home — because it’s not just good for the environment, it’s also good for their wallets.
“Utilities are expensive!” Chris commiserates. “Just being able to save a little money here and there is beneficial for us, and of course it’s beneficial to not use as much energy.” For them, that meant upgrading old appliances. They find that their new, ENERGY STAR-certified appliances are more efficient and perform much better.
They also installed solar panels in 2016 and are reaping the financial and sustainability benefits. “We weren’t sure how it was going to go, but it has cut our electric bill by quite a lot!” Chris shares. “Also, my background is in atmospheric science — we know that fossil fuels are terrible for everybody.”
The Eco-City Homes program is proud to celebrate all the ways Alexandrians are being sustainable at home, big and small.
