Get Functionally Fit with Alloy Personal Training
Personal trainer Michael Jiminez works with a new client.
Want to lose a few inches? Shed some excess weight? Or perhaps you just want to be more functional in everyday life to play with your children or grandchildren. If so, Alloy Personal Training is the answer.
Pivoting During the Pandemic
Russ Merbeth, a lawyer and lobbyist, found his practice taking a hit during COVID-19 lockdowns. Seeking a change, he started talking to friends about their businesses. “I was considering doing something other than lawyering and lobbying,” he shares. This led him to discover the franchise opportunity with Alloy Personal Training, based in Roswell, Georgia.
“I had not been interested in doing anything in fitness,” admits Russ. “But the franchise consultant convinced me that this model would make sense given my general interest in staying fit as I grow older.” Alloy Personal Training, established in 1992 and franchising since 2019, offers a unique approach focused on functional training and building lean muscle mass.
A Focus on Functional Fitness
Russ's inspiration came from observing older relatives struggling with everyday tasks due to a lack of strength. “Everyone loses muscle mass as they age, especially after 60,” he notes. Alloy's workouts emphasize functional strength training, targeting core strength, grip strength, balance, hips, knees, and lower back. “You work with free weights, kettlebells, resistance bands, and even push heavy sleds across the room. It’s an amazing workout that focuses on helping you live your daily life better,” he adds.
Alloy Personal Training targets individuals aged 40-70, with 65 percent of clients being women who understand the importance of strength training. “It’s about a lifestyle and living the way you want to live,” says Russ. Each client undergoes an intake interview and body composition analysis to track progress monthly, allowing trainers to tailor workouts to individual needs, including those with mobility issues.
Russ's journey with Alloy began with trying the workout for himself. “I looked better, and I felt better,” he shares. This positive experience motivated him to open his first location in Old Town, Alexandria, in March, followed by a second in Edgewater, Maryland, which had its grand opening on August 10.
Community and Accountability
Sessions are scheduled on the hour, with clients working out in small groups of up to six, fostering a supportive and engaging environment. “The community aspect is really nice. It provides extra accountability. You are responsible not just to yourself but to your coach and other people in your session,” Russ explains.
He finds joy in meeting clients, understanding their goals, and helping them get stronger. “I’m having more fun now than I have in a number of years,” he says. “I was going to the gym 5-6 days a week and wasn’t enjoying it until I found Alloy. I knew I wouldn’t progress if I kept doing my own thing.”
He has received rave reviews from his clients, including one by Bethany:
“I've been coming to Alloy for four weeks. I was so excited to find something that was small group training versus one on one because I really wanted the community aspect of it and Alloy is that. It's amazing. Absolutely amazing. I bought new jeans right before I started here and I already do not fit in them. They're already too big! It's been amazing and I look forward to my time at Alloy!”
It's Never Too Late to Start
Russ emphasizes that it’s never too late to start improving your physical and mental health. “Fitness improves your physical health, mental health, and helps you sleep better. Consume more protein to build muscles,” he advises.
Alloy Personal Training is more than just a gym; it’s a pathway to a healthier, more functional life. Whether you’re looking to shed weight, gain strength, or improve your overall functionality, Alloy Personal Training provides the support, expertise, and community you need to reach your goals.
