The Del Ray Montessori School (DRMS) has come a long way since it first opened its doors in the fall of 2011. What began as a single-classroom preschool has grown into a thriving educational community, serving more than 50 students ranging in age from 18 months to 12 years.
Founded by Montessori educator Sarah Fondriest, along with parents Rebecca and Jon Underly and Paige Turney, DRMS was created to bring an authentic Montessori experience to the heart of Del Ray. From the beginning, the school was designed to follow the principles of the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), an organization established by Dr. Maria Montessori to uphold the highest standards of Montessori education.
“Staying true to AMI principles has always been important to us,” said Head of School Jennifer Bush. “It’s what sets DRMS apart and ensures we’re offering a deeply respectful and developmentally appropriate experience for every child.”
Growing with Intention
In just four years, DRMS expanded from serving preschoolers in a Primary classroom (ages 3–6) to a full Montessori program, including a Young Children’s Community for toddlers (18 months to 3 years) and an Elementary program for ages 6–12. Despite the school’s rapid growth, its mission has remained steady: to meet the academic, physical, emotional, and social needs of the whole child.
“At DRMS, the learning is hands-on and meaningful,” Bush said. “Our students are not just memorizing facts — they’re baking muffins, embroidering designs, building world maps, and solving four-digit equations. Even our youngest children can independently make tea or arrange flowers to beautify the classroom.”
A Community-Focused School
As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, DRMS is supported by a dedicated Board of Directors and the broader school community. Fundraising efforts support teacher training, campus beautification, and the maintenance of the school’s garden and natural playground. Parents are seen as true partners in the educational journey, with regular Parent Nights, community dinners, and a shared commitment to Montessori principles both in and out of the classroom.
“Montessori isn’t just a method — it’s a way of life,” said Beth Prether, a long-time DRMS parent. “It’s about respecting the child’s capabilities and giving them the tools to become independent, confident, and compassionate people.”
Learning Beyond the Classroom
DRMS students are encouraged to explore the world beyond their campus. The Elementary class recently returned from their 10th annual overnight camping trip, where they built outdoor skills and strengthened peer relationships through team-building activities. The school also participates regularly in community events such as the Del Ray Farmers Market, GardenFest, Art on the Avenue, and First Thursdays.
Whether they’re spreading mulch on the playground, collecting food for local nonprofits like Be the Good, or welcoming guests with a handmade cup of tea, DRMS students embody the values of empathy, responsibility, and respect.
“Everything we do is about helping children feel a sense of belonging and significance,” Bush said. “When children know they matter, they rise to meet their potential.”
The Del Ray Montessori School continues to shape not only curious and capable learners, but also thoughtful citizens who are deeply connected to their community and the world around them.
