Backyard Buddies: The Joy of Pet Chickens

Keeping chickens as backyard pets is becoming increasingly popular—and for good reason. These feathered companions are not only quirky and fun to watch, but they also offer practical benefits like fresh eggs and natural pest control as they snack on ticks and grubs.
During Covid, the Lopez family decided to build a coop and add chickens to their family, as they provide a sustainable natural resource while making sure there are fewer bugs in the yard. This also provided the opportunity to teach their two young boys the responsibility of owning and caring for pets. The chickens have now become a big part of their family and they all love caring for and spending time with them. Everyone enjoys letting them out into the yard and watching their funny antics, listening to the cute noises they make, and love how darling they look when taking their dirt baths.
All of them have names too! Leche, the rooster, is a great guardian of his hen house and really is super sweet and gentle with his humans. The chickens are Lumpy, Mama, Mighty, Dottie, Farrah, Bonita, Cleo, and Chiquita. All of the chickens are sweet, friendly and very calming to watch. The coop also has four new chicks born in June! The babies do not have names as of yet, but they love running around the coop and the yard while practicing their cute chicken noises. The family really enjoys watching them as they grow and begin to develop their own unique personality. Once their personalities shine through, they will each get names that suit them.
Chickens make wonderful, easy to care for pets, provide pest control and are much more entertaining and loving than most expect. Not to mention they provide education and eggs! Looking for an easy to care for entertaining and educational pet? You should give backyard chickens a try!
