Great Guineas!

Tammie Kolb is the proud owner of a small flock of guineas that help control insects, as well as set off the alarm when that blowing leaf may attack or an actual predator is nearby. She tells us that guineas are "nature's alarm system," and one of the most effective multi-purpose assets for pest management and property security.

Her guineas patrol their property along with several of the neighboring properties, all of whom appreciate the birds for their foraging and protection skills. One of the neighbors lovingly calls the flock “The Kraken” as they make such a ruckus and eat constantly.

Guinea fowl are relentless foragers that spend nearly all daylight hours patrolling for food. Unlike chickens, which often scratch up gardens and destroy landscaping, guineas tend to peck insects directly off plants and the ground without causing significant damage to established greenery. Their diet includes a wide range of destructive pests such as grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, flies, ants, spiders, and even small rodents like mice. Not to mention they are truly eco-friendly by providing natural pest control.

Tammie says that while they are not aggressive physical defenders like guard dogs, guineas act as a highly sensitive early warning system and can be heard across many acres. The small flock that Tammie has will go into protect mode by “mobbing” threats; a flock may encircle a snake or small intruder creating a wall of noise and movement that can intimidate the predator into leaving.

They also possess exceptional eyesight and will emit a piercing, repetitive alarm call at the first sign of a hawk, fox, coyote, or snake. Tammie’s traveling guineas are appreciated by neighbors who have vulnerable pets like chickens, ducks, goats and the like. They may be loud, but these birds are highly valued for everything they do for their owner and neighbors alike, making them great pets to have around!
