Meet Tripp Loy
How long have you lived in the neighborhood? I’ve lived in the Houghton Neighborhood my entire life with my mother, father and sister who is currently at college in Texas.
Tell me about your name. My real name is John Loy the third. My nickname is Tripp for triple John or being “the third.”
What school do you attend and what are your plans after high school?
I am a junior at Lake Washington High School. After high school I plan on attending college. I’m still exploring my options on what to study but engineering and business are interesting to me right now.
What extracurricular activities do you participate in? I participate in football, Young Men’s Service League, rock climbing and track. I also like obstacle course training and recently participated in a Spartan race. Snow skiing and wakesurfing are also fun.
How did you get started with your activities and why do you enjoy them?
I played many years of flag football and soccer, changing to tackle football in 8th grade. I mainly play the defensive back position because it requires tackling and speed. I also enjoy Fantasy Football and watching college and NFL teams. I enjoy the physicality of football and the camaraderie with the other players on the team.
As for obstacle course training, when I was younger, I really enjoyed watching the show American Ninja Warrior and climbing big trees. Through that, I sought out similar experiences because there is not a local ninja gym which led to club rock climbing, gymnastics and Spartan. The thrill of it, variety, risk-taking and endurance challenge is what I like best.
I’ve always volunteered through organizations I’ve belonged to and with my family growing up. Young Men’s Service League is a national organization where you do a portion of your volunteering with your mother all throughout high school. There are also monthly group meetings with speakers on various life-skills topics. I’ve held the offices of Sargent at Arms, President and now Vice President of Communications. My favorite organizations to volunteer at so far are Chicken Soup Brigade and Jubilee Reach.
How do you keep a balance between sports, school, and other activities in your life?
It’s difficult especially during football season. I do my best to keep my grades up and have little free time until after the season is over. That’s when I spend more time on the other activities.
What do you like best about living in Kirkland?
It is chill and has everything you’d want in a city. There is not a lot of crime or other negative aspects compared to other cities like Seattle and it is less crowded. Kirkland has everything you’d like in a city. It’s nice that Kirkland is on the waterfront and close to Bellevue and Seattle and that you can go to Houghton Beach and do water sports. Carillon Woods and other parks were fun when I was younger. In the summer one of my favorite things is riding my bike to Zeek’s pizza for dinner downtown.
