Crunching Numbers to the Classroom
Kimberly Cox, Lake Highlands High School, AP Environmental Science and Environmental Systems
Meet Kimberly Cox, a dynamic educator whose unconventional path led from the world of finance to the busy halls of our Lake Highlands community. With a degree in Neuroscience, Kimberly discovered a newfound passion for teaching, transforming classrooms into engaging spaces for students to connect theory with real-world applications.
Kimberly spent a decade in banking and finance before serendipitously stumbling into a classroom. Enamored by the experience, she transitioned to teaching Biology and 8th-grade science. This unexpected shift marked the beginning of her mission to integrate real-world scenarios into the curriculum, giving students a tangible "why" behind their learning.
Kimberly embraces a teaching style rooted in project-based learning, where every lesson connects to practical problems and scenarios. Collaborating with local businesses and cities, she brings the community into the classroom, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real-life situations. The emphasis on career options within each unit empowers students to envision their futures.
In Kimberly's classroom, collaboration is key. Modeled after the real world, students learn to rely on each other, fostering respect and teamwork. Witnessing a classroom transform from a group of strangers to a close-knit family is a beautiful process that she cherishes.
When asked about her favorite part of education, Kimberly lights up: "The students! Teaching seniors is bittersweet. Saying goodbye is hard, but the impact I make every day and the relationships I build keep me coming back year after year."
While Kimberly doesn't have a specific role model in education, she draws inspiration from JFK's quote: "To whom much has been given, much is required." Her unique blend of business experience, neuroscience knowledge, and personal life encounters sets her apart. Current neuroscience research informs her instructional methods, promising a substantial impact on students' lives.
Outside the classroom, Kimberly admits to finding it challenging to switch off from work. Yet, when summer arrives, she escapes to the mountains for hiking and outdoor adventures. Running, camping, and exploring are her go-to activities to rejuvenate.
For those wondering where to catch a glimpse of Kimberly outside the classroom, White Rock Lake is the place to be on weekend mornings. Enjoying NBA games at Jake's with her boyfriend and indulging in brunch at the Thirsty Lion are also on the agenda. Not a fan of shopping, you're more likely to find her at LHHS during the school year or attending student events — because LHHS is her home away from home.
In Kimberly, education has found a passionate advocate who seamlessly blends a diverse background with a deep understanding of neuroscience, creating an inspiring and innovative learning environment for students in Mesquite and Garland.
