Wrapped in Lake Highlands: Jennifer Wetzel’s Heartfelt Home and Community Life

From family adventures to a thriving gift-wrapping business, this Lake Highlands mom is all about staying local and loving every minute of it.

Proudly a self-confessed ‘homebody,’ Jennifer Wetzel lives in Lake Highlands with her husband Cory and their three daughters – Daphne and twins Cybil and Chloe. Explaining her love of the neighborhood, Jennifer says, “We are in an area of a big city that feels like a small community. There's so much support and tradition in this small pocket of Dallas.”

Jennifer grew up in the area, graduated with a BS in Economics from the University of Texas at Arlington, and moved into Dallas proper after graduation. Jennifer and Cory met while both working for an accounting firm downtown. Cory now works for a large healthcare company specializing in retirement and pension plans. This May, the couple celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary with a trip to Hawaii with their extended family.

Middle schooler Daphne attends a local private school with a passion for music - she takes weekly voice and guitar lessons. This past school year, she joined a middle school rowing club. The twins are going into 4th grade at their neighborhood elementary school. Cybil plays soccer, while Chloe is focused on the arts (dance and drawing).

After leaving the workforce when Daphne was born, Jennifer returned to work part-time before becoming pregnant with the twins. During COVID she became a substitute teacher at the elementary school. “So many of the substitutes were retired teachers worried about exposure,” she explains, “so when we sent the kids back to school, I jumped in to help. I am not a teacher by trade, but I have been doing this twice a week for the past four years.” Jennifer also helps a local speech practice with medical billing. Like many moms, she has several ‘gigs’.

The couple devotes their time to their daughters and friends in the neighborhood. Cory has a passion for bourbon (including an extensive collection) and has co-hosted the school’s annual ‘sign-and-go' party for the past three years (raising money for the school PTA). Jennifer has her own gift-wrapping business, ’Wrapped in Lake Highlands,’ which she promotes on Instagram as @wrappedinlh. Jennifer turned her hobby of gift wrapping for family and friends into a business! “I wrap all year, but I am especially busy in May (Mother’s Day and graduations) and November / December for the holidays.” she explains.

Returning to her love for Lake Highlands, Jennifer concludes, “We live in a home built in the 1960s and love that each home in our neighborhood is so unique. We are just a few streets away from White Rock Lake, which offers so much to do, like biking and hiking, and has all kinds of wildlife. As a family, we really love that we have tons of parks and green space so close. We can’t imagine living anywhere else (except maybe the mountains in Colorado!)”
