Eastside Church and Scofield Christian School: Building Faith and Education Hand in Hand

How Two Congregations Came Together to Strengthen Lake Highlands

If you travel Abrams Road with any regularity, you may have noticed a change in signage associated with the large church building between Church Road and Royal Lane. You may have wondered, “What’s going on there?” The church name changed from Scofield Memorial Church to Eastside Community Church, but the school’s name remained Scofield Christian School. What you don’t see from the signage is the merge of two churches of which the school continues to be a part.

Founded in 1877, Scofield Memorial Church, originally First Congregational Church, was one of the first 12 churches in Dallas and was located downtown. It survived a devastating tornado in 1881, but a fire in 1975 prompted the elders to begin the rebuilding process in the heart of Lake Highlands on the crest of a hill. They built what is now a robust facility with the capacity to house their growing church and the Pre-K – Elementary school they founded in 1961.

In 2020 Eastside Community Church, founded in 2018, began meeting on Sunday afternoons in Scofield’s Worship Center. In 2021 discussions began, and an amicable merger occurred in the spring of 2022. As a result of this merger, Scofield Christian School became a ministry of Eastside Church.  Since then, both Eastside and the school have seen record growth. A spirit of trust, cooperation and enthusiasm creates the excellent work environment they enjoy today.

At the weekly chapel, Eastside Pastors often help lead worship or present the message. The students benefit from this adult involvement, but they are the real leaders! Every month a different grade level organizes and leads the chapel from the age of four. It is part of Scofield's discipling the whole child and developing the child’s spirit, mind and body. Students learn to be comfortable standing before a crowd, leading, singing and talking about their Savior, as instructed in Bible passage 2 Timothy 4.

Eastside and Scofield's staff enjoy working together in ministry. Pastor Adam Griffin was a middle and high school teacher before becoming a pastor. He has a passion for education and loves dropping by a class. Dr Tucker, the current Head of School, with over 30 years experience in Christian education, is excited to be a part of the ministry of Eastside. Also, several Eastside pastors meet monthly with 5th and 6th grade students to discuss apologetics and answer any questions of faith students have. Since the church merger, Scofield has welcomed many new Eastside families as well as other Lake Highlands families who have chosen to educate their children at Scofield.

Scofield Christian School has long held a place in the Lake Highlands community as a non-denominational Christian education for preschool and elementary students and will continue to do so without a name change.

If you are looking for excellent academics in a Biblical, Christian environment, consider Scofield. ***PULL QUOTE/SIDEBAR***
"This sweet school is such a gem! I truly believe families who are not at Scofield are missing out and they don’t even know it. Scofield is truly a Christ-centered school, building leadership qualities and character in our children! They have embraced technology, yet they are traditional in their teaching, molding readers, scientists, and leaders! There is no doubt Scofield students will stand out as leaders in their respective communities. Every year I am blown away by our teachers and think it can’t get any better and every year, it gets better! I consider myself blessed to be a part of the Scofield family!" - Teresa Bates

"Our three children wake up every day, excited to go to school! The entire staff makes our children and family feel loved. The education is challenging yet age-appropriate. As a result of the challenging curriculum, our children will be more than prepared for junior high and beyond." - Susan & Ian Fairchild

"I’ve been teaching at Scofield for 18 years. From the first day I walked in, I could tell it was a special place.  It’s so much more than just a school; it’s a family." - Corrienne Mullins
