The Gates Great Taos Adventure!

Tell us about your adventure! We love to ski on Spring Break. Kelly grew up skiing in Taos so we thought it would be great to take the family ski trip there this year. It just so happened that our friends and Neighbors - the Duffys, Strouds, and Blevins - would be there as well. Kelly's parents (LH alums) also joined, and it turned into a great little LH/MPE trip to Taos.
What were some highlights of the trip? Snow, snow, snow. Seriously, it dumped snow on us this spring which made the skiing great. The weather was awesome until the last couple of days when the snow decided to come down in droves, making getting out of the ski valley parking lot a little interesting. It took a couple of us to push the Yukon up the road, and then a slow crawl down the mountain - but all good, it was worth it for the snow! Other than that, hanging out with friends and family and just enjoying the mountains.
How did you get there and any advice on where to stay? We drove, staying a night in Amarillo, then on to Taos the next day. Driving is relaxing for us - and funny to see all the Texas SUV's heading that way for the week. In Taos, we rented a nice little condo in Arroyo Seco at the base of the road going up to the ski valley. And everyone was close by as well which made for a good time after the slopes.
Any favorite places to dine? Orlandos - a must in Taos. The chimichanga with Christmas salsa might be one of the best meals in town. Medley is great as well - a cool spot with a wine bar and a superb menu. We also spent a few hours at the Taos Ale House to watch some of the NCAA tournament. Everything in Taos is easygoing!
Any recommendations for those interested in taking a similar trip? Find a good spot in or around Arroyo Seco and book it early - things fill up fast around there. The location makes it easy to get up the ski mountain and into town.
Make dinner reservations as well - there are some really good spots to eat but on a busy week like Spring Break, you almost absolutely need a reservation unless you want to eat dinner at 10:30pm.
Taos is also great in the Fall - we went last October and it was beautiful. Taos Country Club is a great spot for some golf if your family lets you get away for a few hours.
