Kris and Michelle: The Dynamic Duo Behind Hoops in the Highlands

For Kris and Michelle, basketball isn't just a game—it's a passion that runs deep in their veins.

As co-chairs of the Hoops in the Highlands event for the last four years, they've dedicated themselves to bringing the community together through the love of the sport while making a difference in the lives of Lake Highlands' youth.

Their journey began with a shared love for Lake Highlands and basketball. Kris, a self-proclaimed "basketball junkie," spent countless hours on the court, even after his playing career ended. Michelle, a devoted mother of three - Tristan (8th grade son at LJHS); Jaxon (5th grade son at WRE); Ayden (3rd grade daughter at WRE) - found herself immersed in the world of youth basketball as she shuttled her children to practices and games.

When the opportunity arose to get involved with Hoops in the Highlands, Kris and Michelle jumped at the chance. What started as a volunteer effort quickly turned into a leadership role as they took over the reins of the event. Despite facing challenges such as weather cancellations and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, their determination never wavered.

In 2022, Kris and Michelle made the bold decision to revamp the event, transforming it into a two-day extravaganza held at Lake Highlands High School. With the support of Coach Joe Duffield and the LHHS facilities, they breathed new life into Hoops, making it bigger and better than ever before.

Their hard work paid off, this year over 210 teams and 800 kids participated in the tournament, representing schools from across Lake Highlands and beyond. From live performances thanks to Lake Highlands Dance Academy and Kitty Carter Dance Factory, to concessions and merchandise - everyone LOVES the Hoops shirts each year - Kris and Michelle ensured that Hoops in the Highlands was an unforgettable experience for all ages.

Beyond the thrill of the game, Kris and Michelle's dedication to giving back to the community shines through. Over the years, Hoops has raised thousands of dollars for Lake Highlands schools, supporting initiatives that benefit students and teachers alike. This year, Hoops surpassed all of its fundraising goals and will be able to donate thousands of dollars to the PTAs of LHJH, the LHJH feeder elementary schools, and the Wildcat Club.

As they look to the future, Kris and Michelle remain committed to the success of Hoops in the Highlands. With plans to expand the event further and engage even more volunteers and participants, they're determined to keep the spirit of basketball alive in Lake Highlands for years to come.

For those looking to get involved, whether as volunteers or participants, Kris and Michelle encourage everyone to visit hoopsinthehighlands.com for more information. With their leadership and the support of the community, Hoops in the Highlands is poised to continue making a positive impact for generations to come.
