Driven to Succeed: Corban Kemp’s Journey on and off the Basketball Court

Where do you practice?
Playing since I was 5, I usually practice at school whenever I can get into the gym. Last year, I played on the Under Armour circuit for Dallas Showtyme, a competitive club team.

Who is your inspiration?
My biggest inspirations are my mom and the people who invest their time in helping me get better at the game I love. They motivate me to always work hard and stay in the gym.

Have you met anyone famous?
Through basketball, I’ve had the chance to meet several famous athletes, including NBA champion Terrell Harris, Michael Beasley, Kyrie Irving, Jason Terry, Montae Ellis, Mark Cuban, and Ray Spalding.

Have you been on any trips because of basketball?
I’ve traveled for tournaments to places like Oklahoma, Atlanta, Ohio, Chicago, and Houston. My favorite trip was last year with my AAU travel team when we went to Ohio for our first Under Armour session.

What awards and honors do you havce?
During my freshman year at Lake Highlands, I won the Most Hustle Award. I’ve also been nominated for several First Team honors at exposure camps outside the Lake Highlands basketball program.

What do you love about playing basketball?
I love basketball because it’s a way for me to express myself and blow off steam. Seeing my hard work pay off and watching myself grow as both a player and a person is what keeps me going.

What is your favorite memory?
My favorite moment in basketball was going undefeated in district with my freshman squad. Celebrating that accomplishment with my teammates, after all the hard work and adversity we overcame, was unforgettable.

What has basketball taught you about life?
Basketball has taught me that as long as you work hard and stay consistent, you’ll achieve your goals. Another important lesson is learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable—it’s part of growth.

What are your favorite sports teams?
I’m a huge fan of the Dallas Mavericks and the Oklahoma Sooners.

What is one tip would you give aspiring basketball players?
Stay persistent, don’t quit, and always work harder than everyone else!
