The Sole Sisters' Adventure
Backpacking California's Lost Coast

Jennifer Wilcox and her six fellow Sole Sisters embarked on an unforgettable adventure along the Lost Coast of California. This five-day, four-night journey marked the latest chapter in her three-year tradition of backpacking, with previous excursions covering the Pacific Crest Trail and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
The Journey:The trip began with a flight into Santa Rosa, California, followed by a 3.5-hour drive to the Mattole Trailhead. From there, the group set out on foot, exploring the rugged beauty of the Lost Coast. Each day brought new sights and challenges as they hiked from Mattole to the Black Sands Beach Trailhead, covering miles of untouched coastline.
Wildlife Wonders:One of the highlights of the trip was the incredible array of wildlife they encountered. From sea lions and elephant seals to otters and deer, the Sole Sisters were treated to a natural spectacle. Even the less welcome sightings, like rattlesnakes, added to the adventure. The beach itself was a marvel, providing a magical setting for sleeping under the stars for four consecutive nights.
Meals on the Trail:Their guides ensured they were well-fed with hearty meals throughout the trip. Breakfasts typically consisted of oatmeal or grits, while dinners featured pasta or rice with vegetables and protein. Lunches were simple yet satisfying, with wraps or sandwiches, complemented by high-protein snacks such as meal bars, nuts, beef jerky, and, of course, plenty of candy for that extra energy boost.
Tips for Fellow Adventurers:For those inspired to embark on a similar journey, Jennifer highly recommends REI Adventures. With their expertise in guiding trips, REI ensures that each adventure is not only safe but also thoroughly enjoyable. Whether you're an experienced backpacker or a novice, they make the experience accessible and memorable.
Jennifer and the Sole Sisters left their footprints on the Lost Coast, but the memories and bonds forged during this trip will last a lifetime.
There are now 11 Sole Sisters going on the next backpacking adventure - 5 days on Catalina Island in October 2024!
