Nineteen Years and Counting: Maria Christon
Unveiling the Passion and Dedication of a Lake Highlands Elementary Educator
How long have you been in education, and what is your teaching style?
This is my 19th year in education. I began my education career as a 7th grade Science teacher and spend 6 years there. I then transitioned to being an assistant director of a preschool for 10 years. Currently, this is my 3rd year teaching 6th grade Science and Social Studies at Lake Highlands Elementary.
What is your favorite part about teaching?
Being with my students! When a student works hard to understand a concept, it is a pleasure and joy to celebrate their success. I am also passionate about instilling a love of learning that I hope will last a lifetime. I also enjoy engaging students in thought provoking labs and group centered projects where my students’ talents can shine.
Do you have a role model in education?
My Mom was my role model for entering the education field and having a passion for making a positive impact on our youth. She taught 3rd-6th grade during her teaching career. Watching her enthusiasm and care for students was a driving force for me to join this field of service to others. She instilled a lifelong love of learning for her students and invested in each one of them. I strive to be like her with every new group of kids I meet each year.
Where might we run into you outside the classroom?
I live in Lake Highlands so you may see me out walking our Shiba Inu close to LHHS. I also enjoy attending my students’ extracurricular events and supporting all of their endeavors in our community.
