EDITOR'S LETTER
Dear Neighbors & Friends,
August has a way of slowing us down just enough to appreciate the things that matter most. The long evenings, time on or around the lake, neighborhood walks, and spontaneous conversations with familiar faces all remind us why we LOve our town.
This month, we're introducing you to the Vila family, whose journey to Lake Oswego took them across the country—from New York to St. Louis, Chicago, California, and finally Oregon. Like so many families who settle here, Peter and Molly Vila weren't simply looking for a place to live. They were looking for a community where they could raise their children, build relationships, and enjoy the simple rhythms of everyday life. Their story is a beautiful reminder that "home" is often less about geography and more about the people, traditions, and moments we create together.
That same spirit of community is reflected in two organizations featured in this issue that quietly make an extraordinary difference in the lives of our neighbors.
At Hunger Fighters Oregon, what began as an after-school project has grown into a lifeline for thousands of individuals and families facing food insecurity. Their story reminds us that need exists in every community and that a helping hand, offered with dignity and compassion, can change lives.
Likewise, Meals on Wheels continues to serve our older adults with much more than a nutritious meal. Every delivery brings connection, care, and reassurance to neighbors who may otherwise feel isolated. It's a powerful example of how small acts of service can create an immeasurable impact.
We're also highlighting Lake Oswego City Councilor Ali Afghan, whose thoughtful approach to leadership centers on stewardship and community engagement. His perspective invites all of us to consider the role we play in shaping our city's future and the legacy we hope to leave for generations to come.
And if you haven't visited the Lake Oswego Public Golf Course yet this summer, you are in for a pleasant surprise. As you'll read in this month's feature, the course has become much more than a place to play golf. It's another gathering place where families, friends, and neighbors come together and create memories.
As always, don't miss this month's Happenings section, our Precious Pet feature, and the birthday wishes that put our community back in ("good ole’ fashioned") print.
Most importantly, we'd love to hear from you. We're always looking for more stories you’d like to see shared! If you know a family, organization, business, or neighbor with a story worth sharing, send your ideas to us at greetlakeoswego@gmail.com.
Wishing you a wonderful August!
Cheers,
