WoodrowFest: Meet Brian Bessner & Clay Drury

WoodrowFest, an initiative driven by the Exchange Club of East Dallas, is gearing up for another year of festivities, fundraising, and community enrichment. Founded in 2014, this annual event has become a cornerstone of the local calendar, bringing together families, friends, and volunteers to support the educational dreams of Woodrow Wilson High School students.

The Exchange Club of East Dallas has been devoted to this cause for years, with key players like Clay Drury and Brad Bessner dedicating 14 and 13 years respectively to the mission. WoodrowFest was conceived as a way to provide scholarships for graduating Woodrow students, investing in their futures as they embark on higher education.

The Exchange Club's impact is profound and multifaceted. Besides scholarships, they channel their efforts into enhancing the educational landscape of the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) schools in East Dallas. From supplying essential learning tools to improving school infrastructure with new libraries, science labs, and recess equipment, their commitment radiates across the community.

Volunteering isn't just a pastime for these dedicated individuals—it's a way of life. Clay and Brian collectively contribute hundreds of hours each year, a testament to their unwavering dedication to the cause. Their passion extends to inspiring others to get involved. Whether through donations, attending events, sponsorships, or volunteering opportunities, the Exchange Club of East Dallas warmly welcomes community members to join their mission.

Family plays a significant role in their volunteerism. Raised with a strong ethos of lending a hand to those in need, both Clay and Brian have instilled this value in their families, creating a generational ripple effect of giving back.

The journey of WoodrowFest began with a brainstorming session at a local bar, the Pour House, owned by Woodrow grad Matthew Rangel. From the initial idea of hosting a fundraising party, the event has evolved into a golf tournament and a full-fledged festival. Supported by a dedicated committee comprising Woodrow grads, parents, Exchange Club members, and community leaders, WoodrowFest has collectively raised over $100,000.

WoodrowFest stands as a beacon of community unity, education advocacy, and a celebration of shared values. As the Exchange Club's commitment continues to flourish, Clay and Brian remain at the helm, steering the ship toward a brighter future for East Dallas students and the community at large.
