Adding Value to Woodrow Wilson High: A Math Teacher Who Multiplies Student Success with a Touch of Heart
Q: How long have you been in education?
This is my 9th year teaching. I started by teaching 6th and 7th-grade math at Terra Vista Middle School in Lubbock, TX. After that, I moved to Dallas and taught Algebra I at Lake Highlands High School for five years. Currently, I teach AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Precalculus at Woodrow Wilson High School, where I also serve as math department chair.
Q:What is your teaching/leading style?
My teaching style focuses on building relationships with my students. I believe students learn best when they know, trust, and respect their teacher. As math department chair, I try to support my fellow teachers by taking tasks off their plates whenever I can, and I model best teaching practices.
Q: What is your favorite part about teaching?
The best part of teaching is getting to know my students and being part of their lives. I also love teaching math because it challenges me every day. When students approach problems in new ways, it pushes me to grow as both an educator and a person.
Q: Do you have a favorite quote or role model in education?
I have two quotes I love: "The most productive classrooms are those in which students work on complex problems, are encouraged to take risks, and can struggle and fail while still feeling good about it." – Jo Boaler And "Every child deserves a champion." – Rita Pierson.
Q: What is your life like outside of school?
I married my high school sweetheart in 2017, and we have a goldendoodle named Simba. I enjoy painting, taking art classes, and spending time with my nieces. My husband and I also love cheering on our Red Raiders!
Q: Have any favorite spots in the community?
We love Ebar and are there almost every Friday night!
