Unplug to Reconnect: Mastering Modern Tech-Etiquette

Prioritizing Face-to-Face Interactions in a Digital World

Social connection is a basic human need; we are literally wired this way. But we must disconnect from our devices to enjoy true and deep connections with others. We all seem to be glued to our phones more than ever these days, so it’s important to embrace and prioritize face-to-face interactions. We can’t do better, unless we know better. Here’s a reminder of some common tech-etiquette faux pas to avoid.

1. Keep your phone on silent or vibrate mode in public places. This will prevent your phone from disturbing others around you.

2. Avoid using your phone during conversations or meetings. It’s rude and inconsiderate to be constantly checking your phone while someone is speaking to you. Show respect and give others your full, undivided attention and eye contact.

3. Respect others' privacy. Do not take photos or videos of others without their permission and don’t post anything online without first obtaining consent.

4. Phones have no place at the dining table. Breaking bread with friends and family is all about connection and communication. Your calls, texts and social media can all wait until after the meal.
