Meet the Doolen Family: Building Community and Play in Lakewood

The Doolen family, comprised of Joel, Kelsey, and their two children Jimmy and Kendall, along with their Pomeranian Maggie, has called the Lakewood neighborhood home since 2019. They previously lived in the M Streets after moving to Dallas in 2017. Kelsey, originally from Plano, spent some time in Los Angeles before attending Texas Tech, while Joel hails from Wichita Falls and is an Aggie.

The Doolens cherish their time in Lakewood, where they enjoy the abundance of family-friendly activities and the vibrant community spirit. "We love this area! There’s always something fun to do and places to go," says Kelsey. Their favorite neighborhood spots include Hudson House, Gloria’s, Terellis, and play areas like Birdies and Smokey Rose.

Joel, who works for Frost Bank Lakewood, plays an active role in the community through his job. Frost Bank is well-known for its involvement and support of local initiatives, further solidifying the Doolens’ connection to the area. Joel is also involved with the East Dallas Exchange Club, contributing to the neighborhood’s growth and community spirit.

Their passion for indoor playgrounds has inspired them to open their own business, Down to Play, in the Medallion Center on Northwest Highway. The idea stemmed from their love of indoor playgrounds and the realization that there was a need for such a facility in East Dallas. “Our son, Jimmy, loves indoor playgrounds, and we were driving all over the metroplex every weekend to visit them,” shares Kelsey. “We wanted to create a place where all kids, including those with special needs like our daughter Kendall, can play together in a kind and inclusive environment.”

Down to Play features a 3,500-square-foot playground suitable for children of all ages, with dedicated areas for toddlers and babies. The facility offers climbing, sliding, zip-lining, ball pits, and more. “We created this with our own kids in mind and can’t wait to share it with everyone—family friends and new friends alike—who plan to come,” says Kelsey.

Aside from their business, the Doolens are active members of the community. The whole family supports the Rise School of Dallas, where their children attend. The Doolens’ advice to new Lakewood families is simple: "Get out there and do things!" Their favorite local events include the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk and the annual Lakewood Fourth of July Parade.

Despite their busy lives, the Doolens make time for their favorite activities. Jimmy, who is currently taking swimming lessons, enjoys playing piano and singing, while Kendall participates in various therapy activities. As for Joel and Kelsey, they used to love traveling and trying new restaurants, but now their focus is on their children and business.

The Doolens’ commitment to creating a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for all children is evident in their dedication to Down to Play. The facility not only provides a space for play but also offers a private party room that doubles as a therapy room when not in use for celebrations. “As a special needs mom, I know that doctors and therapy appointments can quickly take over your life,” explains Kelsey. “That’s why our party room will double as an equipped therapy room, allowing siblings to have fun during therapy sessions.”

The Doolen family’s love for their community, combined with their passion for inclusivity and play, makes them a cherished part of Lakewood. Their new venture, Down to Play, is set to become a favorite destination for families in the area, offering a place where every child can enjoy the simple joys of play.
