Game Changer: Coach John Fish

Meet the Athletic Coordinator/Head Football Coach at Woodrow Wilson HS Who’s Tackling Education with Positivity and Purpose

Q: How long have you been in education? What grades and subjects have you taught?
Coach Fish: I’ve been in education for 14 years. I’ve taught a variety of subjects within Social Studies, as well as Health and PE, all at the high school level. Teaching and coaching have always been my passion, and I’ve loved every moment of it.

Q: How would you describe your teaching style?
Coach Fish: My style is all about being POSITIVE. I believe in servant leadership, approaching it as a privilege, not a right. Leadership is earned, and it’s important to use that position to impact others in a positive, life-giving way. Even in the toughest moments, there’s always a positive aspect if you look for it.

Q: What’s your favorite part about being in education?
Coach Fish: It’s tough to pick just one favorite part, but if I had to, I’d say it’s the opportunity to fulfill my calling to impact young people. This work fills me with purpose, and interacting with students every day feeds my soul. As much as I aim to give to my students, they give back to me in countless ways.

Q: Do you have a role model or mantra you follow?
Coach Fish: I have many mentors I look up to, but a mantra I live by and teach is the approach of "Good." No matter the challenge or celebration, something good can come from it if you’re looking for it. I try to instill this mindset in the young people I interact with every day.

Q: How do you balance work and home life?
Coach Fish: Coaching is more than just a job—it’s a lifestyle and a calling. It requires a lot from your family and loved ones. Becoming a father has taught me the importance of being present and prioritizing time with my family. My goal is to be the best husband, father, and coach I can be, in that order.
