Meet Jack Besecker
MIHS Senior and Co-Captain of MIHS Golf Team
The Mercer Island High School golf team is fortunate to have dedicated athletes like Jack Besecker, a senior who has been chosen as this month’s Athlete of the Month. Jack’s journey in golf is a story of commitment, growth, and a passion for the sport that has shaped his high school experience.
A Rediscovered Passion for Golf
Jack’s relationship with golf didn’t begin with an immediate love for the sport. “I played a little bit when I was younger, but I was always busy with other sports and didn’t prioritize golf,” Jack explains. It wasn’t until his freshman year that Jack decided to take golf seriously. “I started to pick up golf again and take it seriously going into my freshman year, right before high school tryouts,” he recalls. This decision to focus on golf was the turning point in his athletic journey and one that would see him develop into one of the team’s standout players.
Memorable Moments and Milestones
Among the many highlights of Jack’s golf career, one moment stands out as particularly special. “Shooting even par at districts and winning while beating Bellevue in a tie break,” he says with pride. This achievement not only marked a personal milestone but also underscored his ability to perform under pressure, a crucial skill in competitive golf.
The Role of Coaches and Teammates
Jack credits much of his development as a golfer to the guidance of his coaches and the camaraderie of his teammates. “My coaches help me a ton, whether it’s with the mental side of the game, a swing change, or small on-course tips that will help me score better,” he says. His teammates also play a critical role, pushing him to improve through friendly competition. “It’s very competitive every time we play with each other,” Jack notes, underscoring the motivating influence of his peers.
A Rigorous Practice Regimen
Jack’s approach to practice is disciplined and strategic, varying between the high school season and the off-season. During the fall high school season, Jack practices with his team daily, focusing on refining all aspects of his game. Matches occur twice a week, offering regular opportunities to apply what he’s learned. The off-season, particularly in the summer, Jack follows an even more intense training regimen. “I practice or play 6-7 days a week, with a tournament or two about every two weeks,” Jack explains.
Staying Motivated and Focused
Golf, like any sport, has its challenges, and Jack has learned how to stay motivated even on tough days. “Sometimes it’s very tough to stay motivated while playing poorly, and sometimes I can feel helpless,” he admits. However, Jack’s resilience shines through as he reminds himself of the importance of every shot. “Knowing that an 80 is better than an 84 or whatever it is, and I should keep pushing through,” he says, reflecting his determination to always give his best effort.
Goals and Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Jack has set clear goals for himself both in golf and personally. “I want to make it to state as a team, and make it as an individual,” he shares. Jack is also focused on improving specific aspects of his game, particularly his approach shots from 150 yards and in. “I can hit it straight enough off the tee, now it’s about hitting it close and making putts,” he says.
A Memorable Team Bonding Experience
One of the highlights of Jack’s high school golf experience has been the annual golf camp. “Golf camp every year is so fun,” Jack says enthusiastically. The camp, held at the beginning of the school year, provides a valuable opportunity for team bonding. “We all drive in the team vans to a golf course, play a round, spend the night in a big house together, and then play again in the morning,” he describes. This tradition not only strengthens team dynamics but also creates lasting memories for Jack and his teammates.
Advice to Aspiring Golfers
To younger athletes aspiring to excel in golf, Jack offers this piece of advice: “Always have a club in your hands and practice with a purpose. Even if you are just messing around in the house juggling a golf ball, hitting one handed shots, or whatever it is, it will help you get comfortable with the club and lead to a greater sense of control even while hitting a non-conventional golf shot.” His journey is a testament to the power of consistent practice and a focused mindset, both of which have been key to his success.
Jack Besecker’s story is one of growth, resilience, and a deep love for the sport of golf. As Jack finishes his high school golf career this year, we wish him and the MIHS Golf Team the best of luck!
