Painting Joy onto the Canvas

For Mill Creek–area artist Ananda Basak, art has always been in the background of his life, quietly waiting for the right moment to take center stage.

Growing up in Kolkata, India, known as the “City of Joy,” Ananda was surrounded by creativity. His father was an artist, and from an early age Ananda was sketching, coloring, and experimenting with crayons and pencils. But it wasn’t until the loss of his father in 2022 that he picked up a paintbrush in earnest, beginning what has since become a vibrant journey into the art world.

“I started painting seriously in 2023, just a couple of simple nature scenes,” he recalls. “My family and friends encouraged me to keep going, and that’s really where it began.” That encouragement has since blossomed into a deep passion, with Ananda’s canvases filled with rich colors, flowing lines, and surreal touches that bring his love of music and nature together.

Ananda describes his style as impressionism with a touch of surrealism. His work often begins with something rooted in nature—a tree, a mountain, or a scene from a recent trip—then evolves into something more whimsical and dreamlike. Music is a constant source of inspiration, too. At home, Ananda plays guitar while his two sons play piano, filling the house with melodies that often find their way into his brushstrokes. “I like to add surreal elements that give the artwork a magical look,” he says.

Like many independent artists, Ananda has faced challenges in presenting his work. Without a professional studio or large display budgets, he often paints from a corner of his home office. Yet his persistence and patience shine through. “I believe in persistence,” he says with a smile. “With time, I’ll build the resources I need.”

For Ananda, one of the most rewarding moments came at his very first art fair booth in Newcastle, WA. “I didn’t expect to sell anything—I was just there to learn,” he admits. “But two of my paintings, including a large one, sold. I was so excited I called my wife in India in the middle of the night to share the news!” Recently, Ananda has drawn inspiration from family vacations, including trips to New Orleans and the Canadian Rockies. He’s currently working on a series that captures those landscapes, while also creating commissioned pieces for collectors.

Outside of painting, Ananda has a musical streak—he once played guitar and harmonica in a college band. And when he’s not painting or strumming, you’ll likely find him watching animated films. “I sometimes like them more than mainstream movies,” he laughs. “Inside Out is my favorite.”

For Ananda, art is not just about paint on canvas—it’s about joy, imagination, and the encouragement of family, friends, and community. As he says, “I just want to keep swimming a million miles in this stream of colors.”
