Scout’s Tail-Wagging Life
Greet Mill Creek’s Pet of the Month for the month of November is Scout, the long-haired dachshund belonging to Mill Creek residents Beverly and Noah Singer.
Scout has lived with the Singer family for all of her 6 years of life. Dogs have always been an important part of Beverly’s life, making the decision to bring home a furry friend easy. She grew up with a family dog as a child, and her friend in college had a long-haired dachshund, which was key in her decision to get a dog of that breed.
Scout may seem like an unlikely name for a female, with male Scouts appearing in many places in pop culture, and even in this very magazine. However, Scout is named after the protagonist of the classic, To Kill A Mockingbird, by renowned author Harper Lee. Scout is very well behaved, with her primary motivation being food and treats. Scout will do many things for food, from obeying commands to helping with household chores such as mopping the floor with her tongue to pick up any extra morsels of food. She asks for dinner very often, usually hours before she is supposed to receive it.
Scout is known for being very sweet and loving to every person she meets. She loves adults and children alike, spending a lot of time playing with the 3-year-old Singer twins, Levi and Aria. Scout’s favorite place to play with the twins is the local park, where she is a celebrity. Whenever she shows up, everybody stops to pet the stunning star of the playground. And Scout is not just a local favorite. She attracted much praise and attention on the hike to the equally famous Hollywood sign in California. But Scout does not let the fame go to her head. She still spends lots of time with her family, following them around wherever they go or sitting on their laps, so they can receive the honor of petting her.
She also loves sleeping in the same bed as her parents, though that usually leaves them with very little room, as she likes to sprawl out and take full advantage of the space. However, Scout is not always sunshine and rainbows. When she sees other dogs, she becomes very protective of her family. She barks at them and is generally wary of any other dog. Scout has always traveled with the family, and this was another reason why the Singer family chose this breed. Long-haired dachshunds are small and extremely portable, which is perfect for people who love to travel.
Scout loves to go on hikes, but since the twins were born, the hikes have turned into strolls to the park, which Scout finds equally exciting. However, Scout is capable of much more. Once, she used her tiny legs to trot 6 miles, which everyone found very impressive. Scout is a very loving and equally good-looking dog who cares deeply about her family, but above all, she is the best girl.
