A garden can be beautiful to look at, but for Beverly and Noah, their Mill Creek yard has become something much more meaningful: a place where their family plays, gathers, grows food, watches birds, and makes memories together.

Beverly and Noah live in Mill Creek with their 4-year-old twins, Aria and Levi, and over the past five years, their garden has become an important part of family life. Much of the landscape was already established when they moved into their Heatherstone home. The previous owner had spent more than 20 years creating the garden as a passion project, leaving the family with a beautiful foundation to enjoy and continue shaping.

For Beverly, one of the things she loves most about the yard is that it looks beautiful throughout the year. From inside the house, she can enjoy the view while washing dishes. While outside, the family has plenty of space to play and explore. The yard was designed with a contemporary feel and several distinct features that draw the eye through the space. A large patio and outdoor fireplace create a natural gathering area, while a trellis leads to a path winding past a water feature, layered landscaping, and a decorative privacy fence. Hanging lights and landscape lighting make the garden inviting both during the day and after dark.

But having young children has naturally changed the way the family uses the space. What was once primarily a beautifully landscaped yard is now also a place for swings, a playhouse and kitchen where Aria and Levi can "serve" their parents imaginary meals, and a sandpit tucked into the backyard. On warm days, a large waterslide comes out, and the family enjoys running around the grass throwing a ball for the dog and simply being outside together.

The family has also created a small fruit and vegetable garden, giving Beverly an opportunity to learn something new alongside her children. She had never had a garden before, but over the past few years, the three of them have learned together. This year, they planted two varieties of tomatoes, basil, beans, potatoes, strawberries, and carrots. The children have already developed their own favorites. Aria loves searching for fresh tomatoes as soon as they begin to grow, while Levi looks forward to finding the strawberries. For Beverly, watching them participate in planting and watering has been one of the unexpected joys of having a garden. "It has really been a joy to garden with the kids," she says. "It feels really satisfying to have these fresh-grown plants for all of us to enjoy eating."

The yard also provides plenty of opportunities for family gatherings. The patio was designed for entertaining, and each summer the family tries to host gatherings where friends and family can enjoy a meal while the kids play nearby. One of their sweetest garden memories came from an unexpected visitor. A tiny bird family made its home in one of the hanging birdhouses, with an opening only about half an inch wide. The family could hear the baby birds chirping inside and occasionally caught a glimpse of them. Every day, Aria and Levi wanted to check on their feathered neighbors until, eventually, the baby birds learned to fly.

The family has noticed plenty of other birds visiting the yard, and they've discovered additional nests around the deck over the years. But that first little family of birds remains especially memorable because the children were able to watch the babies grow and eventually leave the nest. For Beverly, those moments capture what the garden means to her family. "When I think of my garden, I think of peace and joy," she says. "My kids can be very wild a lot of the time, but our time in the garden, it's often times more peaceful just being outside with fresh air and nature."

For her, the garden has become a place to slow down, take a deep breath, and appreciate the everyday moments happening around her. As Greet Mill Creek begins celebrating the gardens and outdoor spaces that make our community special, the Singer family's yard is a wonderful reminder that a great garden isn't simply about what is planted there. It's also about the people who enjoy it, the children who grow up in it, and the memories that take root along the way.
