Embracing Heritage and Athleticism: The Journey of a 17-Year-Old Water Polo Player
In our idyllic town of Moraga, 17-year-old Ellis Culleton embodies the spirit of perseverance and dedication both in sports and life. A fourth-generation resident of his family’s ranch in Bollinger Canyon, Ellis is deeply rooted in his community, surrounded by his supportive family. This strong familial bond fuels his ambitions as an athlete and student.
The Making of a Water Polo Star
Ellis' athletic journey began at the early age of eight, when he started playing Splashball with the Lamorinda Water Polo Club. His passion for the sport was spurred on by his father, a former water polo player in high school and later at the University of California, Berkeley. Inspired by the discipline and skill of his father, as well as the achievements of Olympic athlete Johnny Hooper—whom he admired while watching from the stands at the Spieker Aquatics Center—Ellis decided to pursue water polo seriously.
Currently, Ellis plays for the 18 and under team at CC United Water Polo Club and represents the Campolindo High School Men’s Varsity Water Polo Team. Over the past three years, he has distinguished himself as a key player, contributing significantly to his team's success. His dedication has earned him spots on the 2024 Cadet Men's National Team and the 2025 Youth Men's National Team, experiences that have taken him across the Atlantic to compete in Europe and Italy.
Memorable Experiences and Personal Growth
One of Ellis’s most cherished moments occurred during his time with the Youth Men’s National Team in Italy. Competing against some of the best young players in the world not only tested his skills, but also instilled a sense of pride in representing Team USA. This experience highlighted the value of hard work and commitment, reinforcing the importance of his journey.
Balancing his academic responsibilities with sports commitments is no small feat. Ellis has learned to utilize his free time effectively, ensuring he stays on top of his studies despite the challenges of travel and competition. He attributes his success in managing both worlds, to the accountability instilled in him through sports. “Sports have helped me maintain focus on becoming better every day,” he explains.
A Legacy of Excellence
Ellis's commitment to self-improvement doesn’t stop at water polo. He also swims for the Campolindo Varsity Swim Team in the spring and for the Moraga Country Club during the summer, specializing in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle. His involvement in these sports has not only honed his athletic skills but also reinforced the lessons that sports are more than just games—they are pathways to personal growth.
With an ambitious plan to continue his water polo journey, Jake has committed to play at the Division I level for UC Berkeley, following in the footsteps of many family members who have attended the prestigious university. Looking further ahead, he dreams of competing at the Olympic level and representing the United States on a global stage.
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Athletes
Ellis’s advice to young athletes in his community is clear: “Give 100% every day and strive to improve gradually with each practice.” He emphasizes the importance of resilience, encouraging others to maintain a positive mindset even in the face of challenges. “Never give up,” he insists, “that’s when it matters most, how you respond to those challenges.”
As Ellis continues to navigate his teenage years, balancing sports, academics, and family, he stands as a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and community support. His journey, rooted in the valleys of Moraga, is just beginning, and with each stroke in the pool and splash in the water, he is one step closer to achieving his dreams.
