From Passion to Profession: Capturing Oakdale’s Athletic Spirit Through the Lens

I was given a camera by my dad about 7 years ago at the age of 50 and started taking photos of my son and his friends in sporting events.  I continued to photograph my son's sports and his friends at Oakdale High school.  About 3 years ago it expanded to all sports at OHS.  Two years ago i was asked to be the photographer for Stanislaus State sports and continue to be their photographer for games and media days.  Rodeos also entered the picture about two years ago and I have photographed approximately 15 rodeo and western events.  When my son graduated from high school in 2022 I turned my hobby into a business and hope to continue as long as my body allows.
I have been focused on sports since I picked up a camera.  I have done portraits and family photos, but sports and live events is what inspires me to do the work.
I don't know if I have a most memorable event, but I saw my first rodeo about two years ago in Oakdale.  Was asked to get a couple of photos of the Pro Rodeo for the Oakdale Leader and I was hooked.
Sports photography has built in challenges every day.  You're either fighting sunlight or the lack of light.  Experience is about the only way to overcome these challenges.  I'm usually at some sporting event numerous times a week, so I get the opportunity to try different things and experiment in order to get it right.
The majority of my work is centered around the Oakdale community.  I get asked to go to various places to photograph, but Oakdale is home and is what started me on this journey.  I will photograph community events when I can as well as it's always great to give back to a community that supports your business.
My goal is that I can provide life long memories for athletes and their families.  Youth and high school sports is short lived and I know having those memories of my own children is something I will always cherish.  Being involved in the Oakdale community, I also hope I can show others how special a community we have.
