Introducing Stephanie Herroz

The Unpredictable Beauty of Watercolor

Art has been a constant in my life since childhood, evolving from simple drawings to a deeper pursuit of creative expression. My passion led me to animation school, where I honed technical skills and explored the popular styles dominating the industry. However, after years of mimicking trends, I felt a growing need to carve out my own identity as an artist. This journey led me to watercolor, a medium that resonated with my love for unpredictability and vibrancy. The fluid, uncontrollable nature of watercolor brings life to my work, as every stroke and blend of color seems to take on its own unique energy.

Inspiration and Medium
Watercolor is my primary medium, and its whimsical, slightly unpredictable qualities captivate me. I enjoy how the colors interact and flow, often creating effects that feel alive and dynamic. My fascination with sea creatures, especially fish, inspires much of my work. Their vibrant scales and shimmering beauty bring vibrancy and character to my pieces. A standout project for me is my salmon painting, where I captured their intense red transformation during reproduction—a process that reflects both the fragility and resilience of life.

Influences and Challenges
Impressionism and traditional Chinese painting deeply influence my style. While I haven’t yet perfected a fusion of the two, the journey is as rewarding as the goal. My greatest challenge has been stepping away from trends to find my unique voice. As a natural people-pleaser, I initially sought validation by replicating popular styles. However, I eventually realized the importance of making my art personal and authentic. This meant setting boundaries and prioritizing my vision over external feedback—a difficult but necessary step in my growth as an artist.

Community and Impact
Sharing my work with others has been a fulfilling experience. In 2024, I participated as an Artist in Residence at the Oakdale Morning Market and had pieces displayed at the Gallery on 3rd Street. Through my art, I hope to evoke a sense of life, warmth, and the beauty of God’s creations. For those interested in viewing or purchasing my work, my art will be on display at the Gallery on 3rd Street throughout December, with an opening night on December 12th at 5 PM. Prints of some pieces are also available for purchase, offering a chance to bring the vibrancy and hope of my creations into your own space.
