Larry and Nancy Podolsky
Celebrating 53 years of marriage, the couple reflects on a lifetime filled with love, family, and cherished memories in the wonderful Oakdale community.
Nancy is second-generation, born and raised in Oakdale. Larry's family moved to Oakdale when he was a senior in high school, and he attended Oakdale High School for his senior year. They met when Larry's family moved next door during high school—he was "the boy next door." Nancy earned an AA degree at Modesto Junior College (MJC). Larry attended MJC and then Fresno State for his undergraduate degree in zoology. He attended medical school in Chicago at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, the same medical school his dad attended. He then completed a four-year residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Northwestern University in Chicago.
They got married while Larry was a student at Fresno State. When he was accepted to medical school in Chicago, they packed up a U-haul truck and drove across the country, pulling their little Karmen Ghia behind. During their time in Chicago, while Larry was in medical school and residency, she managed the office practice for a physician at Northwestern University. Their two oldest children were born in Chicago - moving back to Oakdale when they were 2 yr & 6 weeks old. They celebrated their 53rd anniversary this year!
Upon their return to Oakdale in 1980, Larry joined the practice of another OB/GYN, where they were kept busy delivering patients at Oak Valley Hospital and the three other hospitals in Modesto. Larry's career in medicine was illustrious, delivering approximately 3,500 babies until his retirement in 2005. Even after retirement, he continued to share his knowledge, teaching a medical course at Columbia Junior College for 15 years. Nancy, on the other hand, had a successful fabric and quilting shop business on Yosemite Ave from 1984-1993, Oakdale Stitching Post.
Larry and Nancy's family is a testament to their love and commitment. Their daughter, Sara, is a local ER nurse, and her husband, Josh, is a paramedic/fireman for Modesto Fire Department. They have 2 boys, Owen and Carter - junior & sophomore at Oakdale High School. Their son, David, and his wife live in San Diego with their children, Wesley and Quinn, who are in 8th and 7th grade. Their youngest daughter, Laura, and her husband live in Sacramento. All their children graduated from Oakdale High School.
During Larry's time practicing medicine, he was known for baking his signature "Dr. P cookies" (chocolate chip) for the nursing staff. He still bakes cookies, keeping a supply in the freezer, when the neighborhood kids knock on the door asking if there are any.
Larry and Nancy have been deeply involved in our community. Larry served on the Community Hospice board for many years, and they both continue to be active supporters of the organization. Larry's turkey carving skills have been a staple at the Spirit of Oakdale Thanksgiving dinners. Nancy served on the Oak Valley Hospital Board for 13 years and volunteered there for 30 years, running the Gift Shop for 12 years. She was pivotal in establishing Sober Grad Night at Oakdale High School in 1993 and served as chair for 6 years. She is the president of Oakdale ARTS, treasurer of the Oakdale Garden Club, and on the Morning Market committee. She also manages social media posts for the Astro Thrift Shop.
Five years ago, the two moved closer to downtown to the house Nancy's parents had owned since 1948. They enjoy being in the neighborhood where Nancy was raised, and only a three-block walk to downtown. “We enjoy hosting friends and neighbors for "porch party cocktails" on our large front porch. We also enjoy walking downtown to the restaurants, local shops, and Sunday breakfasts at J.C.'s Cafe. When we are with their grandsons, they usually want to know if we can go for their favorite milkshakes on Third Street—Robert's Ferry.”
