Riley Coviello-Miller: Academic and Athletic Champ at Oakdale High School
As team captain for three years, I’ve cherished the camaraderie with my teammates, who are like family to me. Supporting them through their struggles and triumphs has been incredibly rewarding.
Growing up in Oakdale with my sporty older brothers, Zackary and David, was always lively. My dad, Mr. Miller, an OHS teacher and tennis coach, often picked me up from school and took me to his tennis practices. From elementary through middle school, I watched him coach, forging friendships with his players and nurturing my own love for the game. My first tennis racquet, a pink Serena Williams model, was a gift from my dad when I was seven.
In my sophomore year, I played a tight, three-set match against a girl from Sierra High, who is now a close friend. Winning that match was a pivotal moment for me, especially when my dad told me I had clinched the team’s victory. My dad, my only coach and my best friend, has always been my biggest supporter. His guidance has been invaluable, both on and off the court.
As team captain for three years, I’ve cherished the camaraderie with my teammates, who are like family to me. Supporting them through their struggles and triumphs has been incredibly rewarding. Playing number two in the lineup during my junior year was challenging, but it taught me resilience and determination.
Our girls' 2024 tennis season starts in August, with practices commencing in the first week of school and games picking up in late August or early September. After being VOL champs last year, we aim to continue our winning streak. We’d love more community support at our games—family and friends make a huge difference.
Outside of tennis, I find solace in baking and reading. Baking calms me, and I love sharing my treats with loved ones. Reading helps me unwind, providing a much-needed break from the rigors of daily life. This summer, I enjoyed coming home from practice, indulging in a good book, eating dinner, and listening to music—a perfect way to relax.
