Porchfest 2024
Porchfest last month was a lively celebration of musical diversity, bringing people together on individual family front porches and lawns. The event featured a dynamic mix of bands and solo artists, from grunge and punk to classic rock, pop, indie, jazz, country, and even ukulele. Local talent shone brightly, making Porchfest a memorable day of community, music, and joy in Ripon.
One standout performance was by Sweet Mama Rachel and the Homemade Jam Band. This organic group of talent was missing their sax player during Porchfest, but that didn't stop them from drawing a huge crowd on Vera from 1-3 pm. Lead vocal Rachel Merchant belted out crowd favorites like Love is a Lie (Beth Hart), Unchain My Heart (Ray Charles) and Lie to Me (Johnny Lang). Adam Castellanos on drums, Raul "Slaps" on bass, and Ripon's own Issac Lewis on guitar and vocals kept the energy high. The band has been together since 2020, starting during Covid when their rehearsals turned into jam sessions, hence the name. They play locally at P. Wexford's (Modesto), Crooked Spur (Oakdale), and 108 Sports Lounge (Riverbank), among other venues. This year, they've entertained at the Stanislaus County Fair, the Almond Blossom Festival, Lucca Winery, and more. Their fun and dynamic chemistry is evident in their performances, making them a crowd favorite.
