Joshua’s Journey: Strength, Patience, and Unconditional Love
For the Allison family, autism awareness means celebrating every milestone and supporting their son’s unique path forward.
For Alexis and Gerardo Allison, parenting has been a journey of love, learning, and resilience. Their son Joshua, now four, has autism, and every step forward is a milestone worth celebrating.
Joshua is a gentle, affectionate little boy who loves books, animals, and being outside, especially if water is involved. Whether he’s bouncing on the trampoline or splashing around, his laughter has a way of making the entire family smile.
Like many parents navigating an autism diagnosis, Alexis remembers noticing the signs early. Around 18 months old, Joshua experienced a regression and lost the words he once used. Eye contact faded, and he no longer showed interest in playing with others.
“It was hard,” Alexis shares. “There were so many appointments and questions. As a parent, it’s easy to wonder if you did something wrong.” But over time, the Allison family realized something powerful: Joshua was exactly who he was meant to be.
Today, their days are built around routines that help Joshua thrive. During the week, he attends therapy, and on weekends, the family focuses on simple joys like playing at parks, swimming, and spending quality time together.
Joshua communicates using an AAC device, and one of the most meaningful milestones has been watching him grow closer to his younger brother, Samuel.
Recently, the family explored MeRT therapy at Novara Healthcare, where they began seeing encouraging changes. “We noticed improvements in eye contact, sleep, and he seems more aware of what’s happening around him,” Alexis explains.
For Alexis, Autism Awareness Month is about helping others understand that autism is not something negative; it’s simply a different way of experiencing the world.
Her message to other families is simple but powerful: take things one day at a time.
“Your child’s diagnosis doesn’t change who they are or what they can achieve.”
