Stockersfield: From Partnership to Powerhouse in the Kern Debate Circuit
Team Picture!
Within the Kern debate community, there is only space for so many teams. But with new developments, a new team was formed: Stockersfield. Originally a joking term, “Stockersfield” eventually became the official name for the combination of the Stockdale and Bakersfield High School debate teams. This name was first sparked at last year’s Jon Schamber Invitational at the University of the Pacific. At the time, Bakersfield had a small debate team, consisting of only 2-3 debaters, so joining forces with Stockdale allowed the two teams to save on costs and meet judge requirements. Since that tournament, everything just clicked. The Stockersfield team has continued to grow and thrive, attending prestigious tournaments together, such as NSDA Nationals, the Berkeley Invitational, and this year’s Jack Howe Invitational, University of the Pacific Invitational, and La Costa Canyon Invitational. Our collective successes have made us feel like more than just two teams working together for practical benefits — we’ve become a true debate family.
The results speak for themselves. At this year’s Jack Howe Invitational, two of our teams advanced to the semifinals and quarterfinals, showcasing the talent and effort of everyone involved. Most recently, at the La Costa Canyon Invitational, we were joined by Thomas Woods, who brought a fun-loving new addition to the team. Two of our Stockersfield teams placed in octofinals and quarterfinals, making our name known in the debate circuit.
It's not just the students who have joined forces. The coaches have also come together to further develop this team. Bakersfield High School’s coach, Mrs. Thompson, has judged, worked, and helped all the students, alongside Stockdale’s coaches, Mr. Pusavat and Mrs. Huddleston.
Of course, the heart of Stockersfield lies with the students who make up this powerhouse team. Sofia Bye, a prominent member of our nationally ranked Sierra World Schools Team (currently in the top 11 in the nation), has been the statement piece in our success. Other standout members include Kai Kim, Devansh Anand, Habiba Alnahhal, and Kavon Khajivand, who each bring their abilities and knowledge to the table.
What started as a logistical partnership has formed into a close-knit community that represents the valley. From nighttime practice sessions to celebrating victories at tournaments, we’ve built something special together. Stockersfield isn’t just here to compete, we’re here to make our mark.
