Giving Back with Purpose: The Vision Behind Purpose Driven Foundation

The Altavas family

“We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a
difference.” – Nelson Mandela

For Katrinna Ching-Altavas, founder of the Purpose Driven Foundation, making a
difference has always been more than a goal—it has been a calling. Katrinna and her
team have dedicated over a decade to supporting Seniors through their for-profit home
health and home care business.

Now, they are expanding their reach with the launch of the Purpose Driven Foundation,
a nonprofit that focuses on empowering Seniors and enhancing lives in Bakersfield and
the surrounding areas. “From the very beginning, philanthropy was part of our vision,”
Katrinna shares. “It has been 12 years since we started our business, and we have
always known that we wanted to give back to the community in a meaningful way. Two
years ago, we were finally ready to turn that vision into a reality!”

A Purpose-Driven Mission
The Purpose Driven Foundation aims to address the gaps in support for Seniors by
providing essential services and resources. One of its flagship initiatives, the Equip for
Life Program, loans durable medical equipment to seniors without cost. Items such as
wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and hospital beds are collected, sanitized, and repaired to
be reused—helping seniors maintain mobility and independence.

“We really saw there is a need in dealing with Seniors in the community,” Katrinna
explains. Seniors need medical equipment that might not be covered by insurance, or
they might not have the money to afford wheelchairs, hospital beds, shower chairs, and
so forth. By loaning equipment, she can ensure these resources are available to those
who need them most, regardless of socioeconomic status.”

The foundation also focuses on sustainability by repurposing gently used durable
medical equipment. “In our research, we discovered that two million tons of medical
waste is produced each year. Our goal is to reuse each item up to six times, reducing
environmental impact; all while serving the community.”

Dignity Through Essentials
In addition to medical equipment, the foundation distributes Senior Essentials Hygiene
Kits on the first Thursday of every month. These kits include items that support daily
hygiene and health, helping Seniors maintain their dignity and confidence. “We have
learned that small gestures can make a huge difference,” Katrinna points out. “These
kits are a simple; yet impactful way to show Seniors that they are cared for and valued.”
To kickstart their mission, the Purpose Driven Foundation participated in a Holiday Block
Party at Seven Oaks, where they introduced a Giving Tree initiative. Community
members scanned QR codes on holiday ornaments to access the foundation’s Amazon
Wishlist to donate new equipment to the Equip for Life Program during a season of
giving!

The foundation also has an ongoing Gently Used Donation Drive where anybody from
the community can stop by and donate their gently used durable medical equipment
such as walkers, canes, wheelchairs, knee scooters, crutches, and rollators. Take back
space in your home and donate your unneeded equipment to give it a new life!

Donations can be dropped off at 11901 Bolthouse Drive Suite 100, Monday – Thursday
during the hours of 9 A.M. – 5 P.M. Please ask for the Foundation. “We are building a
community-driven effort,” Katrinna shares. “We need help spreading the word about our
programs and gathering donations to sustain our services.”

Looking Ahead
The foundation is preparing for its official launch in early spring, inviting the community
to join its mission. “This is fulfilling work for me,” Katrinna says with a smile. “At the end
of the day, the most important thing is giving back to the community.” With its innovative
programs and unwavering dedication, the Purpose Driven Foundation is poised to make
a lasting impact! Seniors in Bakersfield now have a compassionate ally in their corner,
empowering them to lead healthier, more independent lives.

Together, we can create a brighter future for our Senior community. Every ounce
of effort makes a difference!
