The Magic of Diamond Head

Ocean view from the summit

Over the winter break, I had the chance to visit the island of Oahu in Hawaii, and it was such an incredible experience. I found out that more than 5.5 million people visit Honolulu each year, but even with the crowds, the island has so many special, quieter spots that make it unforgettable. Of course, many people head straight for the popular destinations like Waikiki Beach and Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, but one place that really stood out to me was the hike at Diamond Head State Monument.

This place is so different from the usual tourist stops. Diamond Head is a broad, saucer-shaped crater formed nearly 500,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption along the Ko’olau rift zone. As you hike up, you’re surrounded by the kind of lush nature and wildlife that make Hawaii so special. I was lucky enough to spot some of the local birds, like the Java Sparrow and Brazilian Cardinal, which added to the whole experience.

The hike itself was the perfect balance—not too long but still a bit of a challenge. When you finally reach the top, the panoramic view of the coastline and the horizon stretching over Honolulu is absolutely worth it. It felt like I was standing at the edge of the world.
