On the evening of March 14, I had the privilege of attending one of my favorite events as both a Bakersfield College Foundation Board Member and a proud Bakersfield College Alumnus – the 18th Annual Sterling Silver Fundraiser. Each year, this event reminds me not only of how far Bakersfield College has come, but also of the extraordinary community that continues to invest in its students.

This year’s gathering welcomed approximately 300 guests, all united by a shared belief in the power of education. Sterling Silver is more than a fundraiser – it is a celebration of opportunity, talent, and the life-changing impact of higher education.

One of the most unique and inspiring aspects of the evening is that the dinner itself is prepared and served by Bakersfield College’s own Culinary Arts students, working alongside their chef-faculty and supported by the college’s food services team.

As an alumnus, it is incredibly meaningful to see students not just benefiting from the College but actively showcasing their skills in such a professional and elegant setting. Each course was thoughtfully crafted and paired with specially curated wines, elevating the experience for every guest in attendance. The evening was further enriched by live music performed by BC’s jazz students. Their talent set the mood while highlighting yet another dimension of student achievement. These moments serve as powerful reminders that Bakersfield College is not only an academic institution, but also a place where creativity and passion are nurtured.

A central part of the Sterling Silver event is recognizing the donors and partners whose generosity has a profound impact on students’ lives.

This year’s honorees were:

Philanthropist of the Year:
Drs. Naina & Ravi Patel

Community Partner Award
Kern High School District

Bakersfield College Service Medal:
Cornelio “Corny” Rodriguez

Honoring these individuals and organizations is always a highlight, as their commitment helps open doors for so many who might otherwise be unable to pursue a college education. At the same time, the event itself plays a critical role in raising funds to support current and future students.

Thanks to the generosity of this year’s attendees and supporters, we estimate that approximately $35,000 will be added to the Bakersfield College Foundation’s scholarship fund.

These funds directly support students striving to achieve their educational goals – students who are working hard to build a better future.

Looking ahead, the Foundation has set an ambitious goal: to award $2 million in scholarships in the coming year. It is a bold target, but after witnessing the spirit and generosity on display at this year’s Sterling Silver event, I am confident it is within reach.

As I reflect on the evening, I am filled with gratitude – for the donors, the students, my fellow board members, and the entire Bakersfield College community.

Sterling Silver is not just an event; it is a testament to what we can accomplish when we come together with a shared vision. And as both an alumnus and a board member, I am proud to be part of that story.
