French Polynesia: Closer Than You Think
Why This South Pacific Paradise May Be the Ultimate Island Escape
Beautiful Tahiti
For many West Coast travelers, Hawaii has always been the obvious tropical getaway. At five hours from Los Angeles, it feels accessible, familiar, and easy to reach. But what many people don’t realize is that the stunning islands of French Polynesia are only about three hours farther.
Just eight hours from LAX, travelers can step into a completely different world – one filled with turquoise lagoons, lush volcanic peaks, overwater bungalows, and the warm hospitality of Polynesian culture. When you really think about it, eight hours is simply two meals, two movies, and a little sleep.
Recently, I attended a webinar hosted by Air Tahiti Nui, and what stood out immediately was the warmth and friendliness that seemed woven into the experience from the moment you board the flight. It perfectly reflected what so many travelers discover once they arrive: French Polynesia is not only breathtakingly beautiful, but genuinely welcoming.
A Trip to Remember
My husband and I traveled to French Polynesia several years ago to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary, and to this day, it is still one of our favorite trips. We stayed at The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, famously featured in the movie Couples Retreat.
What began as a beautiful anniversary getaway quickly became unforgettable when we were upgraded to an overwater bungalow complete with its own private plunge pool overlooking Mount Ottoman. Waking up each morning to those sweeping lagoon views felt surreal – the kind of scenery that almost doesn’t seem real until you experience it for yourself.
One evening, we attended a traditional Polynesian night featuring local food, music, drumming, and dancing. The dancers got the audience involved, and experiences like that are often what travelers remember the most long after returning home.
More Than Just Overwater Bungalows
One of the biggest misconceptions about French Polynesia is that every stay must involve an expensive overwater bungalow for the entire vacation. While those iconic accommodations are certainly special, many travelers choose to divide their stay between beachside rooms and a few nights over the water.
It’s a wonderful way to experience both styles while making the trip more budget friendly. In recent years, the destination has also expanded its range of accommodations, offering everything from ultra-luxury resorts to charming boutique hotels and more approachable options for families and couples alike.
I recently met with hotel suppliers here in Bakersfield representing properties throughout the islands, and it was encouraging to see just how many different experiences are now available for travelers.
Exploring the Islands
Another surprise for many visitors is how easy it is to explore beyond one island. Some travelers choose small-ship cruising with companies like Windstar Cruises or Paul Gauguin Cruises, allowing them to unpack once while experiencing multiple islands.
Others prefer to island-hop independently, using local ferries or short flights between islands. Each destination offers its own personality – from the dramatic beauty of Bora Bora to lush mountains of Moorea and the cultural heartbeat of Tahiti itself.
And while the scenery alone is reason enough to visit, there is no shortage of activities. Travelers can snorkel in crystal-clear lagoons, swim with rays, hike volcanic trails, take catamaran cruises, explore local markets, or embrace the slower pace that makes the islands feel so restorative.
The Best Time to Visit
French Polynesia is a year-round destination, but many travelers prefer to visit during the drier season from May through October, when temperatures are pleasant, and humidity is lower. The quieter months can also offer excellent value and fewer crowds, making them appealing to travelers seeking a more relaxed experience.
Paradise Within Reach
French Polynesia often feels like a once-in-a-lifetime destination reserved for dream trips. The reality is that it is far more accessible than many people imagine. In less than a day, travelers can go from the California coastline to some of the most beautiful lagoons in the world.
Whether you are celebrating a milestone anniversary, a special birthday, a honeymoon, a retirement, or want to experience paradise for yourself, French Polynesia offers memories that last long after the journey ends. Sometimes the most extraordinary trips are the ones we finally decide to take.
If French Polynesia has been on your dream list – or perhaps is now – I would love to help plan and book the perfect island escape.
